Unbeaten IBF Lightweight Champion Raymond Muratalla of West Covina, California defends his belt for the second time when he takes on former WBC Junior Lightweight Champion Robson Conceicao of Brazil this Saturday, August 1st. The 12-rounder from Las Vegas, Nevada, can be seen live in America on TNT and Tru TV as well as on DAZN in most nations. Muratalla last fought in January when he beat Andy Cruz by a majority decision. Eight months earlier, Muratalla beat Zaur Abdullaev via a wide unanimous decision for the interim IBF Crown. Conceicao’s last outing came in April when he shut out Helber Rojas over 10-rounds.

The 29-year-old Muratalla climbs into the ring with a perfect mark of 24-0 with 17 Ko’s and has 125 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2016. Before that, he enjoyed a brief amateur career and beat a young Ryan Garcia in a district Silver Gloves Tournament. Muratalla has plenty of power in his punches with a current knockout ratio of 70. 8 per cent however he was dropped in the first round by Humberto Galindo in March, 2023 and has also been deposited on the canvas before that. He’s won five of his last nine fights by stoppage and 14 of his past 19.
Muratalla stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 72-inch reach and is trained by Robert Garcia. He first stepped up in class against Jeremia Nakathila in May, 2023 when he stopped him in two rounds for the vacant WBO Global Lightweight Title. He also has wins over Xolisani Ndongeni, Miguel Contreras, Jair Valtierra, Jeremy Hill, Elias Damian Araujo, Jose Gallegos, Jesus Campos and Luis Porozo. One of Muratalla’s biggest wins was a 10-round unanimous nod over former world champion Tevin Farmer for the vacant WBO NABO Lightweight Title in a battle which also saw him defend his NABF Belt. He’s been taken the distance just seven times and has fought longer than nine rounds only five times.
Before upsetting O’Shaquie Foster by controversial split decision in July, 2024 for the WBC Junior Lightweight Belt, the 37-year-old Conceicao was best known for his draw with Emanuel Navarrete in 2023 for the WBO Belt and his 2022 unanimous decision defeat to Shakur Stevenson for the vacant WBC and WBO Titles. He also suffered a controversial unanimous-decision loss to Oscar Valdez in 2021 in a shot at the WBC Junior Lightweight Crown. Conceicao’s reign as world champion didn’t last long as Foster beat him by split decision in their rematch four months later.
On the bright side, Conceicao won a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics in Brazil as a lightweight. He also competed at the 2012 Olympics in England where he was beaten by Josh Taylor in his first contest and fought at the 2008 games in China where he was also beaten in his first fight. In addition, Conceicao competed in several World Amateur Championships and dropped a close decision to Vasyl Lomachenko in 2011. His record is now 21-3-1 with 10 Ko’s. He has average power in his fists as 47.6 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage and he’s halted just three of his last 11 opponents.
Conceicao measures just over 5-feet-9 inches tall with a 70-inch reach for a 1.5-inch height advantage on Muratalla while giving up two inches in reach. He has has boxed a total of 176 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. His fights against top-notch competition as a pro have been against Foster, Navarrete, Stevenson and Valdez and all were close affairs. The Brazilian’s has also beaten the likes of Xavier Martinez, Luis Coria, Carlos Ruiz, Edgar Cantu, Joey Laviolette and Eduardo Pereira Dos Reis. He has a decent chin but was dropped in the second round by Coria in 2020 and was also dropped by Navarrete.
Prediction…
Muratalla is well known for his power but he surprised a lot of people with his boxing skills in his recent win over Andy Cruz as Cruz was widely regarded as the superior boxer heading into that bout. Conceicao, who is now 37 years old, eight years older than the champion, isn’t known for one-punch power but is certainly capable of stopping opponents with a combination of shots. I’m expecting him to have his moments but I believe Muratalla will retain his belt as long as he can replicate his performance against Cruz. It should be another close, tough contest though with the odds here being a bit wide.
Muratalla’s combination of power and skill should be the difference.
