Jesus Ramos Jr of Casa Grande, Arizona will be putting his Interim WBC Middleweight Title on the line this Saturday, September 19th when he clashes with unbeaten Meiirim Nursultanov of Kazakhstan. The 12-round fight from San Diego, California can be seen live on DAZN in most nations. Ramos won the interim belt the last time out in December when he beat Shane Mosley Jr. by a comfortable unanimous decision. In his previous outing Ramos halted Guido Schramm in the third round. Nursultanov was last in the ring in almost three years ago when he beat Julio Alamos by a wide 12-round unanimous decision.

Ramos Jr. is just 25 years old and is a southpaw who has boxed 126 rounds since turning pro in 2018 as a teenager. As an amateur, he reached the semifinals of the 2017 USA Youth National Championships. He climbs through the ropes with a fine mark of 24-1 with 19 big Ko’s. He possesses plenty of power as 79.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including four of his past five. Ramos measures 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 72-inch wingspan. The lone pro defeat on his record came when he first took a step up in class against Erickson Lubin in 2023.
He came out on the wrong end of a 12-round unanimous decision in that contest. Since then he stopped Johan Gonzalez in the ninth round; Jeison Rosario in the eighth round and Guido Schramm in the third stanza before decisioning Mosley Jr. Ramos also has wins over Joseph Spencer, Esteban Garcia, Jesus Emilio Bojorquez, Javier Molina, Brian Mendoza and Luke Santamaria. He stopped Vladimir Hernandez in February, 2022 to capture the vacant WBC USA Silver Super Welterweight Title. Ramos is the nephew of Abel Ramos.
The 33-year-old Nursultanov fights out of Newbury Park, California and owns a perfect record of 20-0 with 11 Ko’s. He stands 6-feet-tall with an unlisted reach for a two-inch height advantage on Ramos. He has boxed 120 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. As an amateur he won the 2015 Kazakhstan National Title and also competed in the World Series of Boxing where he beat Troy Williamson, Kalvin Henderson, Tomasz Jablonski and Arlen Lopez.
Nursultanov possesses decent power but nothing exceptional as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 55 per cent. In fact, he’s stopped just three out of his last 10 opponents. He captured the vacant NABF Jr. Middleweight Title in 2018 with an eight-round unanimous decision over Jamar Freeman. He added the WBC USA Middleweight Belt in 2019 via a 10-round unanimous nod over Cristian Olivas and took the vacant WBO International Crown in 2022 when he stopped Andrey Sirotkin after five rounds. He has defended that belt three times including an eighth-round TKO over Kazuto Takesako in 2023.
Since Nursultanov hasn’t fought in almost three years it’s understandable why many fans haven’t heard of him. He became the top-ranked challenger by the WBC after his last outing in 2023 and didn’t really want to risk that position. He was supposed to face WBC Champion Carlos Adames but negotiations didn’t go anywhere after several purse bid deadlines. Still, sitting out for almost three years definitely won’t help his career in the long run. However the winner of Saturday night’s fight is supposed to get a shot at the full WBC Middleweight Champion Carlos Adames.
PREDICTION…
Nursultanov is eight years older than Ramos, hasn’t fought in almost three years and lacks serious power. Ramos struggled somewhat against Erickson Lubin when he first stepped up in class but has bounced back with four straight wins and three of them coming by stoppage. Ramos has explosive power and has faced better opposition. He’s typically more aggressive than Nursultanov, who will have some obvious ring rust, and that’s why I believe he’ll emerge with another victory, even if he has to go the distance.
Ramos’ aggressiveness and power should lead to victory.
