The Woodbine Mile is set to take place this Saturday evening at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. This is the 30th running of Canada’s premier turf mile, and there is plenty on the line again this year. Along with the $1,000,000 purse, the Woodbine Mile is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, and the tagline for the series is “Win and You’re In”. That means the winner earns an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland in late October, so there is real pressure on this field to perform in order to claim the first place prize and a spot in the year end championship.
The two headliners are Deterministic and defending champion Notable Speech. Deterministic arrives on a six race winning streak that includes four straight Grade 1 victories, while Notable Speech returns to defend the title he won last year before going on to capture the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

As you can see, Deterministic and Notable Speech are the class of the field and should be the two shortest prices on the board. Deterministic has been the best turf miler in North America this year, rattling off six straight wins and posting a career best speed figure in the Grade 1 Fourstardave last time out. The one question mark is that he has never run at Woodbine, and the E.P. Taylor turf course can catch first timers off guard.
Notable Speech is the one they all have to beat. The Godolphin runner won this race last year for trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick, then went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile and earn an Eclipse Award as champion turf male. Appleby and Buick have now taken the Woodbine Mile in three of the last four years, and the turning track is said to suit his running style. Of the two favourites I would lean Notable Speech, simply because he has already proven he can handle this course and this level.
My longshot to use underneath is Silius. The French colt ships in for Wertheimer et Frere with Hall of Famer John Velazquez, who has won this race a record five times, and he should be a much bigger price than the two favourites. In a race where Deterministic and Notable Speech figure to soak up most of the money, a live European invader like Silius is worth a look on your exacta and trifecta tickets.
