Welterweight hopefuls Alexis Rocha of Santa Ana, California and former WBO/WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Jose Ramirez of Avenal, California are set to do battle this Saturday, September 12th. The 10-round welterweight affair from Las Vegas, Nevada can be seen live on DAZN pay-per-view in the UK and Ireland. Fans in most other nations can catch it on Paramount+ on the undercard of the Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn fight. Be aware that this bout will headline the early preliminaries. Rocha last fought in March when he beat former world champion Joseph Diaz by a 10-round unanimous decision. That was Rocha’s first fight since his 12-round draw with Raul Curiel in December, 2024. Ramirez last saw action in May, 2025 when he dropped a wide 12-round unanimous decision to Devin Haney. It was the second straight loss for Ramirez as he lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Arnold Barboza Jr. six months earlier.

The 29-year-old Rocha is a southpaw who enters the ring with a record of 26-2-1 with 16 Ko’s and has 179 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut in 2016. As an amateur, Rocha became the youngest boxer to win a gold medal at the 2012 Junior Olympics when he was just 14 years of age was a six-time amateur national champion. Rocha stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and carries pretty good power in his fists as 61.5 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage.
He’s gone the distance in his last three contests but has halted six of his past 12 opponents. Rocha’s first pro defeat came at the hands of Rashidi Ellis by way of 12-round unanimous decision in 2020 in a shot at the vacant WBC International Welterweight Title. His second loss was a sixth-round KO at the hands of Giovani Santillan in a slugfest in October, 2023 when he lost his WBO NABO Welterweight Crown. Rocha bounced back by stopping Fredrick Lawson after seven rounds and earned a 10-round unanimous decision over Santiago Dominguez for the vacant WBO NABO Welterweight Title before drawing with Raul Curiel in 2024.
Earlier in his career Rocha captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Crown in 2018 with a first-round stoppage of Miguel Perez and successfully defended it against Shoki Sakai, Berlin Abreu, Roberto Valenzuela Jr and Brad Soloman. He stopped Abreu in the eighth round and Valenzuela after five. Rocha then won the vacant WBO NABO Welterweight Belt in 2022 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Luis Alberto Veron. He then defended it against Jesus Campos, George Ashie and Anthony Young. He also also has a ninth-round stoppage win over Blair Cobbs.
Ramirez is now 34 years old and won the vacant WBC Junior Welterweight Crown with a unanimous decision over Amir Imam in 2018. He defended it for the first time with a unanimous decision over Antonio Orozco before beating Jose Zepeda by majority decision and taking down Maurice Hooker in six to add the WBO Title. He then met Viktor Postol in 2020 and won a majority decision. Ramirez attempted to unify the belts against Josh Taylor in 2021. Taylor held the WBA and IBF Belts and beat Ramirez by a close 114-112 call on all three scorecards despite being dropped twice.
Ramirez rebounded from the loss to Taylor with a 12-round unanimous decision over Jose Pedraza and an 11th-round stoppage of Richard Commey. He then earned a 12-round unanimous nod over Rances Barthelemy in April, 2024. That was the last fight Ramirez has won as he was then derailed by Arnold Barboza Jr. and Devin Haney. This means Ramirez makes the ring walk with a mark of 29-3 with 18 Ko’s and has boxed 196 rounds since turning pro back in 2012. He measures 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 72-inch reach for an inch advantage in height and two inches in reach over Rocha.
As far as power goes, Ramirez is slightly ahead of Rocha as 62.1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he has gone the distance in nine of his past 11 fights. Ramirez also enjoyed a fine amateur career. He fought at the 2012 Olympics in London, England where he went 1-1. He also faced Vasyl Lomachenko at the 2011 World Championships and was beaten 16-9 on points. Since turning pro Ramirez has also won the NABF Junior Welterweight Title as well as a couple of other regional belts. Ramirez has also defeated Antonio Orozco, Amir Imam, Mike Reed, Issouf Kinda, Johnny Garcia, Jake Giuriceo, Robert Frankel, Ryusei Yoshida and Tomas Mendez earlier in his pro career.
Prediction…
Big things have been expected of Rocha and if he’s going to make a move he needs to do it now as this is arguably his stiffest test as a pro. Rocha took a bit of a beating from Giovani Santillan three years ago as he was dropped three times. He showed a hell of a lot of heart in that fight though and has bounced back pretty well with three wins and a draw. However he also took a lot of punishment from Curiel so he’s been in a couple of wars now. Ramirez is five years older and has lost his last two fights. He’s also fighting as a full-fledged welterweight at 147 lbs for the first time and has been out of the ring for 16 months. This is a crossroads fight that could go either way. I believe Rocha has a slight edge though in a 10-round contest as he’s a natural welterweight and has been more active recently.
Rocha’s recent activity and recent form could be the difference in a tossup.
