Bryan Acosta vs Carlos Orona Preview October 16th, 2026

There’s an all-Mexican featherweight showdown in Phoenix, Arizona this Friday, October 16th when Bryan Acosta battles it out with Carlos Orona. The 10-round bout can be seen live on Probox.TV. Acosta was last in the ring in March when he beat Ronny Rios by a 10-round unanimous decision to snap a two-fight losing skid and win the WBA Continental Americas Featherweight Belt. In his previous two fights he was stopped by Sulaiman Segawa in the seventh round and dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Ramon Cardenas seven months earlier for the WBA Continental Latin America Featherweight Title. Orona’s last fight resulted in an eight-round unanimous decision over Diego Andrade Chavez.

My Pick
The 28-year-old Acosta, who fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada, enters the contest with a mark of 21-2 with 8 Ko’s. He has 139 rounds of pro experience to his name since making his debut in 2016 as a teenager. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. As an amateur, he reportedly compiled a record of 117-7. Acosta doesn’t possesses much in the way of power as just 38.1 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage. However three of his last five victories have been by knockout.
Acosta started his pro career at 20-0 but then ran in Ramon Cardenas and Sulaiman Segawa, so he really needed the win over Ronny Rios earlier this year to get his career back on track. Coincidentally, both of his defeats came in his first two fights in the USA. However his win over Rios was also in America and he’s back in the USA again this weekend. Acosta won the vacant WBC Continental Americas Featherweight Belt via a 10th-and-final round TKO over Benito Sanchez Garcia in Toronto, Canada in 2022. He also has wins over Diego Chavez, Dennis Contreras and Pablo Robles.
Orona is just 25 years old and old climbs through the ropes with a mark of 16-1-1 with 14 Ko’s. He made his pro debut in 2021 and has boxed 88 rounds since. He’s the same height as Acosta at 5-feet-7-inches and also has an unlisted reach. He definitely possesses more power than Acosta though as 87.5 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. Orona has gone the distance in two of his last three fights and is 2-1 in that stretch.
His lone defeat came at the hands of Yusuf Adisa Adeniji by a six-round unanimous decision in April, 2025. The fight was held in Saudi Arabia in the round of 32 of the WBC Grand Prix – Featherweight Tournament. Adeniji was deducted a point in rounds four and five for holding and the contest was scored as a majority draw after six rounds, However Adeniji advanced thanks to the WBC’s enhanced tie-breaking scoring system at the event and was awarded a unanimous decision.
The lone draw on Orona’s record is an eight-round affair with Juan Jose Lopez Alcaraz in 2022. He won the WBC Fecarbox Featherweight Title in 2023 when he halted David Carmona after five rounds. This will be Orona’s first fight in America and just his second contest outside of Mexico. He’s taking a bit of a step up in class as just six of his 18 opponents entered the ring with a winning record.
Prediction…
After halting his two-fight losing streak Acosta is stepping back into the ring with a power puncher in Orona. Acosta is an aggressive, toe-to-toe boxer with good counter-punching skills but he lacks power. Therefore this fight may come down to his chin as it’s surely going to be tested. Acosta does have experience against tougher opposition though but he lost his two most notable fights. I think this is a pick-em fight to be honest but Acosta’s experience against tougher opponents should benefit him.
Acosta should prevail in a close call.
