Jonathan Gonzalez vs Abraham Perez Preview June 14th, 2026

Jonathan Gonzalez of New York City puts his interim WBA Flyweight Title on the line against unbeaten Abraham R. Perez of El Paso, Texas this Sunday, June 14th. The 12-round bout from Grand Rapids, Michigan can be seen live on DAZN. Gonzalez captured the belt in his last outing when he beat Yankiel Rivera by a 12-round unanimous decision after dropping him in the second round. In his previous outing in October 2024, Gonzalez was the WBO Light Flyweight Champion and went up in weight to challenge WBA Flyweight Boss Anthony Olascuaga. The fight was originally called a no-contest as the pair clashed heads midway through the opening round and Gonzalez quit after saying he couldn’t see. The the ringside doctor ruled that he could continue though despite the small cut and the decision was changed to a TKO after an appeal. Perez was last in the ring in April when he beat Esneth Domingo via a 10-round unanimous decision for the vacant IBF Inter-Continental Flyweight Belt.

My Pick

The 35-year-old Gonzalez is a southpaw who has 212 rounds under his belt since making his pro debut in 2011 following a fine amateur career. He stands 5-feet-2-inches tall with a 62-inch reach and resides in Puerto Rico. He enters the ring with a mark of 29-4-1 with 14 Ko’s. Since turning pro he’s also won the interim WBO Youth Flyweight Title in 2012 and the NABA Light Flyweight Crown in 2015. He also captured the the WBC Latino Flyweight Belt in 2015 and has captured his WBO NABO Title a couple of times.

His lone draw came against Michael Ruiz Jr in 2014 over eight rounds while his other three defeats came at the hands of Kosei Tanaka by seventh-round stoppage in 2019; to Jobert Alvarez by sixth-round KO in 2016 and to Giovani Segura by fourth-round KO in 2013. The loss to Tanaka came in a shot at the WBO World Flyweight Crown but he won it two years later with a unanimous decision over Elwin Soto and defended it three times. Gonzalez has been stopped in all of his losses so it’s fair to say he has a suspect chin.

He’s also beaten the likes of Shokichi Iwata, Juan Alejo, Julian Yedras, Ricardo Rodriguez, Carlos Ruiz, Miguel Del Valle, Omar Soto and Danny Flores. Gonzalez isn’t known as a heavy puncher as 48.3 per cent of his wins have come by way of stoppage and he’s gone the distance in six of his past eight outings. As an amateur, Gonzalez captured gold medals at the 2008 Youth World Championships and the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. His father, Luis Gonzalez earned Golden Glove awards in 1980 and 1982.

The 27-year-old Perez carries around a perfect record of 14-0 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed 81 rounds since making his pro debut in 2021. As an amateur he reached the final of the 2018 USA National Championships as well as the 2016 USA Youth Open Tournament Quarterfinals, the 2015 USA Junior Olympics Semifinals, the 2015 USA Junior National Championships Finals and the 2014 USA Junior Olympic National Championships Quarterfinal.

Perez also reportedly won the 2019 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and won a National Golden Gloves Title. At 5-feet-3-inches tall with an unlisted reach, Perez is an inch taller than Gonzalez. He possesses average power as well as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 50 per cent and he’s gone the distance in three of his past five fights. Perez won the vacant IBA Inter-Continental Flyweight Belt in 2023 when he stopped Jeronil Borres in the third round and defended it with an eighth-round TKO over Gilbert Mendoza.

He added the vacant IBA World Title by halting Luis Villa Padilla in the ninth round and the WBC Youth Silver Flyweight Belt in 2024 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Fernando Diaz. Next on the list was the vacant NABF Flyweight Crown when he stopped Adrian Yair Ibarra Herrera in the fifth round last December. Perez is fortunate to be boxing as he reportedly had a near-death experience in 2024 when losing consciousness while performing water-breathing exercises in a pool. He was pulled from the water and suffered organ failure and had to spend several days in a medically-induced coma.

Prediction…

Gonzalez is an underrated boxer but you never know which version is going to show up. At his best he’s a world beater but some nights he’s just average or even mediocre. Either way, Perez will need to dictate the action and let his hands go as he’s eight years younger. I can see this fight going either way really but I think I’m going to go with Perez in a mild upset due to his amateur experience and boxing skills. Let’s say he’ll do just enough to pull out a victory and remain undefeated. Mind you, I thought Rivera would beat Gonzalez in his last fight and the veteran proved me wrong with a great performance.

A close call with Perez having a slight edge.
