Alberto Puello vs Miguel Angel Bolano Preview July 18th, 2026

Former WBC Junior Welterweight boss Alberto Puello of the Dominican Republic is back in the ring for the first time in a year as he takes on Miguel Angel Bolano of Colombia this Saturday, July 18th. Puello last fought 12 months ago when he dropped a majority decision to former IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico to lose his belt and suffer his lone pro defeat. This weekend’s 10-round battle takes place in Puello’s homeland and can be seen on the Shuan Boxing You Tube channel. Before losing the title to Matias, Puello edged Sandor Martin by a split decision in his first defence. He had also beaten Gary Antuanne Russell via split decision in June, 2024 for the interim belt and was then promoted to full champion. Bolano last boxed in October when he was stopped by Gustavo Lemos in the sixth round.

My Pick
The 31-year-old Puello is a southpaw who fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada and made his pro debut in 2015 following an amateur career which saw him fight at the 2014 PanAmerican Sports Festival. He’s boxed 188 rounds as a pro and makes the ring walk with a fine mark of 24-1 with 10 Ko’s. Puello measures just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 71-inch reach and as far as power goes, he’s a little below average as just 41.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he has gone the distance in his last seven fights.
Puello has won the vacant WBA Fedelatin and WBC Latino Super Lightweight Titles as a pro as well as the WBA Interim Belt in 2019 when he beat Jonathan Alonso by unanimous decision. He defended the title against Cristian Coria and Jesus Antonio Rubio but was stripped of the belt when the WBA got rid of its interim titles. He then faced Batyr Akhmedov for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight Championship in August 20, 2022 and won by a split decision in a slugfest. Things turned sour shortly after that however when Puello tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and was given a six-month suspension in June, 2023.
The 27-year-old Bolano climbs into the ring with a record of 10-4 with 7 Ko’s and has just 56 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut in 2022. He measures just over 5-feet-5-inches in height and has an unlisted reach so gives up four inches in height to the former champion. as far as power is concerned, 70 per cent of Bolano’s victories have come by stoppage but he’s halted just two of his last seven opponents.
The first loss suffered by Bolano came at the hands of Luis Cabrera in his second pro outing via a six-round unanimous decision. He then lost in his fourth pro contest when Esteban Garzon also beat him by a six-round unanimous nod and in 2024 he was beaten via the same route when Camilo Enamorado outpointed him.Bolano then reeled off five straight wins until Lemos halted him in October. The fight against Lemos was also his first bout outside of Colombia.
Prediction…
Puello is a solid, underrated boxer who is back in the ring to stay active. Bolano doesn’t pose much of a threat to him but still he needs to be taken seriously. When all is said and done though, fans should expect Puello to have his hand raised in victory and a stoppage is also possible.
Puello is a class or two above Bolano at this stage of their careers.
