Hard-hitting Steven Butler of Montreal, Canada and Edgar Berlanga of Florida will be going at it in a 10-round super middleweight bout this Sunday, July 26th. Butler last fought in March when he stopped Ramadan Hiseni in the second round. Belanga’s last fight resulted in a fifth-round knockout at the hands of Hamzah Sheeraz in July. This weekend’s contest from New York City can be seen live on Paramount + while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports. In his previous outing in March, Berlanga rebounded by stopping Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in the first round for the vacant WBO NABO Super Middleweight Belt after dropping a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez in a shot at the WBC/WBA/WBO Super Middleweight Titles six months earlier.

Butler is 30 years old and owns a mark of 38-5-1 with 32 Ko’s. He turned pro back in 2013 and has boxed 190 rounds since his debut. He possesses good power as 84.2 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage including his last six straight. However, he’s also lost four of his last 14 fights. Butler certainly doesn’t have the greatest chin in the division as all five of his defeats have come by stoppage. He was halted by Brandon Cook in the seventh round in 2017 for his first pro loss and lost his NABA and IBF North American Super Welterweight Titles.
He then suffered two straight stoppage defeats in 2019 and 2021. The first came at the hands of Ryota Murata in the fifth round in December, 2019 in a shot at the WBA Middleweight Title. He didn’t fight again until January, 2021 and was halted again in the fifth round, this time by Jose de Jesus Macias in a shot at the vacant NABA, NABF, and WBC Francophone Middleweight Belts. He was stopped by Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in the second round in a shot at the WBO Middleweight Title in May, 2023 and Patrice Volny stopped him in the ninth round in June, 2024 in another shot at the vacant WBC Francophone Middleweight Belt.
Butler’s lone draw was an eight-round majority affair with Jaime Herrera in June, 2015 in a shot at the vacant NABF Junior Super Welterweight Title. However, he did manage to win the vacant IBF Youth Super Welterweight Title in 2016 when he stopped Sladan Janjanin in the third round. He captured the vacant IBO International Super Welterweight Crown when he stopped Jaime Herrera in a rematch in the 10th round in March, 2018.
He stopped Jordan Balmir in the third round to take the vacant WBC Francophone Middleweight Title a few months later then then added the vacant WBC International Middleweight Belt with a 10-round split decision over Vitali Kopylenko in May, 2019. Butler also avenged the loss to Macias by stopping him in the fourth round of their rematch last June. He stands just under 6-feet-tall with a 75-inch reach and enjoyed a fine amateur career with a reported record of 50-5 and won a Canadian amateur title in 2013. He also has wins over Steve Rolls, Joshua Conley, Mark DeLuca, Carson Jones, Jesus Gutierrez, Janks Trotter, Ferdinand Pilz, Teemu Tuominen and Silverio Ortiz.
The 29-year-old Berlanga makes the ring walk with a mark of 23-2 with 18 Ko’s and has boxed 90 rounds since his pro debut. He started his pro career in 2016 by flying out of the gate with 16 consecutive first-round knockouts. However, he’s been taken the distance now in six of his last nine fights. Before halting Padraig McCrory in February, 2024, his last stoppage came in December, 2020 when he stopped Ulises Sierra in 160 seconds. Still, 78.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage.
Berlanga, who’s nicknamed ‘The Chosen One,’ measures 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 73-inch so is 1.5-inches taller than Butler but gives up two inches in reach. He and also had a good amateur career with a reported record of 162-17. He placed second at the 2013 National Police Athletic League Championships (Junior Level), second at the 2013 U.S. National Junior (Under-17) Championships, third at the 2014 U.S. National Youth (Under-19) Championships and second at the 2015 U.S. National Youth (Under-19) Championships.
It’s no secret that Berlanga’s power along with decent skills have helped him get this far with some of his other wins coming over the likes of Roamer Alexis Angulo, Steve Rolls, Marcelo Caceres, Jaime Barboza, Aaron Garcia, Samir dos Santos Barbosa, Cesar Nunez, Eric Moon, Lanell Bellows, and Demond Nicholson. Jason Quigley, Nicholson, Alvarez, Caceres, Rolls and Angulo are the only men to go the distance with Berlanga and also get past the sixth round. His 10-round unanimous decision over Caceres in October, 2021 saw him capture the vacant WBO NABO Belt and he defended it against Rolls, Angulo and Quigley.
Prediction…
Both boxers have great power but I’d say that Berlanga has the better overall boxing skills. He also proved to be quite durable against Canelo Alvarez and has the sturdier chin when compared to Butler. However Butler can’t be ruled out as he has a lot of heart and if he connects on the button Berlanga is certainly going to feel it. A stoppage win by either boxer shouldn’t surprise anybody but Berlanga has faced tougher opposition and should come out on top.
Berlangs’a experience against better foes should be the difference.
