My Pick
The 27-year-old Sandoval makes the ring walk with a mark of 27-2 with 18 Ko’s. He has 167 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in Mexico in 2016 as a teenager. As an amateur he reached semifinals of the 2014 USA Junior Olympic National Championships where he was beaten by Keyshawn Davis. Sandoval stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 67-inch reach and as far as his power is concerned, he has pretty heavy hands as 66.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he has gone the distance in five of his past eight fights.
His first defeat came at the hands of Alonso Ceja by four-round majority decision in 2016 in his fifth pro outing. He then reeled off 16 straight wins before dropping a 12-round majority decision to David Jiminez in July, 2022. Jiminez was deducted a point in round seven for holding and Sandoval was decked in the 11th round. Sandoval captured the vacant WBC Youth Inter-Continental Flyweight Title in 2019 when he stopped Christian Orenday in the sixth round.
He also has wins over Victor Sandoval, Brent Venegas, Oscar Vasquez, Marco Sustaita, Gilbert Gonzalez, Carlos Buitrago, Raymond Tabugon, Jay Harris, Jerson Ortiz and Rocco Santomauro. Sandoval has been pretty active as he has 29 fights to his name and is just 27 years of age. His first major triumph came in July, 2024 when he stopped former world champion Angel Acosta in the 10th round to win the vacant WBC Silver Flyweight Title.
The 26-year-old Mendoza is a southpaw who enters the ring with a fine record of 27-1 with 23 Ko’s. He has 115 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in Mexico in 2018 as a teenager. He’s known for his volume punching and solid body shots but is coming off of a KO loss, so the jury’s still out on his chin. Mendoza measures 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 67.5-inch reach and has a two-inch height advantage on Sandoval as well as a minimal half-inch reach advantage.
As far as power goes, he has plenty of it for a flyweight as 85.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including six of his past seven. None of the first 12 opponents Mendoza faced had a winning record but then he began stepping up in class. He has wins over Angel Ramos Serrano, Edinson Martinez, Joel Cordova and Mpumelelo Tshabalala. Mendoza won the vacant WBC Fecombox Flyweight Title in 2021 with a sixth-round KO over Arturo Segundo Geronimo. He added the vacant WBC Fecarbox Flyweight Crown the next year when he stopped Francisco Gomez Sanchez, also in the sixth round.
Prediction…
Mendoza is a late-replacement challenger in this fight as Sandoval was originally supposed to face Oscar Collazo. However Mendoza is coming off of a quick knockout loss so could be a little gun-shy. I thought Sandoval was given a bit of a gift with his decision over Kenshiro Teraji to win the belts last year especially after being dropped in the fifth round. He has the edge in experience against Mendoza but will need to be able to handle his power. This should be a close fight and a Mendoza upset wouldn’t really come as a shock but I’ll give Sandoval the edge as he’s got better overall boxing skills.
Sandoval’s experience and skills are the key.
