Young unbeaten super middleweight prospect Wilkens Mathieu of Quebec City, Canada will be fighting in his hometown this Thursday, October 8th when he takes on Vladimir Shishkin of Russia. It was the second straight defeat for the Russian as he dropped a close unanimous decision to William Scull in a shot at the vacant IBF Super Middleweight Title 11 months earlier. My Pick
Mathieu is only 21 years of age and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 16-0 with 11 Ko’s. He made his pro debut in 2023 as a teenager and has 67 rounds of experience under his belt since. As an amateur he reportedly went 30-2 after switching to boxing from taekwondo at the age of 10. He was a five-time regional Golden Gloves Champion and won the Canadian Junior Championship. He also represented Canada in numerous international tournaments, earning several medals and fought at the IBA Youth Men’s World Championships.
Despite his success, Mathieu said he wasn’t a fan of amateur style boxing and that’s why he turned pro at a young age. He’s beaten every pro opponent he’s faced and has pretty good power in his arsenal as 68.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including 11 of his last 14. Mathieu measures 6-feet-1-inch tall with an unlisted reach. He won the IBF and WBC Continental Americas Titles last October when he dropped Shakeel Phinn in the third round and beat him by 10-round unanimous decision.
As for Shishkin, he’s now 35 years old and fights out of Florida. He enters the contest with a 17-2 record with 11 Ko’s. He has boxed 140 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following his amateur career. He reportedly went 301-29 as an amateur and also competed in the World Series of Boxing. He stands 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 73-inch wingspan so is the same height as Mathieu. He also possesses better-than-average power as 64.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, including five of his past seven.
Shiskin’s first pro defeat came at the hands of William Scull in a shot at the IBF Belt and he lost on the scorecards by two, three and four points. In his second loss to Iglesias, he had lost all seven rounds before being stopped in the eighth. Other than Scull and Iglesias, he hasn’t really taken on any elite world-class opponents but does have wins over Gasan Gasanov, Nadjib Mohammedi, DeAndre Ware, Ulises Sierra, Oscar Riojas, Sena Agbeko, Jose Uzcategui, Jeyson Minda, Ramon Ayala and Mike Guy.
Prediction…
Mathieu is known for his speed, combination punching and defensive agility, but I’m not sure how good his chin is. He’s 21 years old and feels a need to step up in class in his 17th pro contest. He’s 14 years younger than Shishkin with about the same amount of power. The outcome will depend on Shiskin’s tactics. If he allows the youngster to dictate the action he’ll likely come out on the wrong end of a decision or stoppage. However if he lets his hands go, is the aggressor and tests Mathieu’s whiskers he has a chance of winning. Shishkin has the tools to win this but does he have the right mindset to do so? I may be way off base but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here and the slight edge due to his experience.
Shishkin’s experience could be the difference maker.
