Jose Luis Russell Regalado vs Rene Calixto Preview October 3rd, 2026

Rene Calixto of Mexico battles it out with fellow countryman Jose Luis Russell Regalado in Sonora this Saturday, October 3rd. The 10-round flyweight bout is for the WBO NABO Title and can be seen in Latin America on ESPN Knockout. Calixto last fought in June when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Masamichi Yabuki in a shot at the IBF World Flyweight crown. It was just his second career pro defeat with his first loss coming in May, 2025 when he was edged via a split decision by Willibaldo Garcia Perez in a rematch for the IBF Super Flyweight Title. The two first met five months earlier for the belt but it was declared a 12-round split draw. Regalado last saw action in April when he stopped Mario Gomez in the seventh round.

  • Rene Calixto -138

My Pick

Regalado is a 24-year-old southpaw from Tijuana with a record of 19-1 with 13 Ko’s. He made his pro debut in 2019 as a teenager and has 97 rounds of experience to his name. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information for the youngster so we don’t know how he measures up size-wise to Calixto. However we do know that he carries above-average power in his punches as 68.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last three.

The lone defeat on Regalado’s record came at the hands of Joaquin Cruz Castillo by way of an eight-round split decision in June of last year. He’ll be taking a big step up in class this weekend as just nine of his first 20 opponents entered the ring with a winning record. He’s yet to face a legitimate contender and has fought outside of Mexico just once. Regalado captured the vacant WBC Youth Silver Flyweight Title in 2022 via a 10-round unanimous decision over Jesus Lemus Garcia.

Calixto is 31 years old and climbs through the ropes with a mark of 24-2-1 with 10 Ko’s. He has 151 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut in 2016. Calixto measures 5-feet-5-inches tall with an unlisted reach and carries less power in his punches than Regalado as just 41.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. In fact he has halted just three of his last 10 opponents now. Calixto first took a a step up in class against Willibaldo Garcia Perez in his two world-title attempts.

He fell short both times with a draw and loss and fell short again when meeting Masamichi Yabuki. However he gained some valuable experience against world-class foes in those fights. Just seven of Calixto’s first 24 opponents entered the ring with a winning record. Actually, based on his record at the time, some fans were wondering how he got a world title shot in the first place. He also has wins over Sikho Nqothole and Ruben Lezama Gonzalez.

Prediction…

Calixto and Regalado are somewhat similar when it comes to the paths they’ve taken as pros. They were facing domestic-level opponents for the most part and suddenly took a big leap in class. Calixto wasn’t overwhelmed when taking on better opposition even though he didn’t earn a win. He was competitive in all three fights and gained experience. Regalado is hoping to do the same thing at an earlier point of his career he’s seven years younger. Regalado has the power to stop Calixto but he possesses a solid chin, so that isn’t likely. I doubt Calixto has the power to halt Regalado so this fight could go the distance. I’m expecting Calixto to come out on top due to his experience against stiffer opposition.

Calixto’s experience should sway things his way.
