Luis Alberto Lopez vs Daniel Lugo Preview September 11th, 2026
Former IBF Featherweight Champion Luis Alberto Lopez of Mexico is back in the ring on Friday, September, 11th when he faces fellow countryman Daniel Lugo. The 10-round junior lightweight bout from Oceanside, California can be seen live on ProBox TV. Lopez last fought in February when he stopped Miguel Mejia in the third round. Lugo’s last outing resulted in a 10-round unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Edward Vazquez in a shot at the vacant WBC USA Super Featherweight belt. It was the second loss in the past three fights for Lugo and he’s won just one of his last four contests.

Lopez is 33 years old and carries around a record of 32-3 with 19 Ko’s. He’s boxed 197 rounds since turning pro in 2015 and stands 5-feet-4-inches tall with a wingspan of 66.5 inches. As far as power goes, Lopez isn’t considered a knockout artist but 59.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including five of his past seven, with only Josh Warrington and Joet Gonzalez going the distance with him. Lopez also has fine boxing skills and a pretty solid chin despite being brutally knocked out by Angelo Leo.
The first pro defeat Lopez suffered came at the hands of Abraham Montoya by way of a 10-round split decision in 2018 to lose his Mexico Pacific Coast Super Featherweight Title. He then dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Ruben Villa in 2019 for the vacant WBO International Featherweight Crown. He rebounded by winning 13 consecutive bouts including victories over Reiya Abe, Joet Gonzalez, Michael Conlan, Josh Warrington, Isaac Lowe, Gabriel Flores Jr, and Andy Vences.
Lopez originally won his IBF Featherweight World Title via majority decision over Josh Warrington in England in December, 2022. He then defended it against Conlan, Gonzalez and Abe and stopped Conlan and Abe. However he then ran into Angelo Leo in his fourth defence and was upset in the 10th round when Leo sensationally knocked him out. Lopez has since bounced back with stoppage wins over Eduardo Montoya and Miguel Mejia.
As for the 31-year-old Lugo, he makes the ring walk with a mark of 28-4-1 with 19 Ko’s and has 168 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2015. He measures just over 5-feet-7-inches tall for a 3.5-inch height advantage on Lopez. Unfortunately there’s no information on his reach though. He carries above-average power in his punches as 67.9 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s halted just three of his past 13 opponents. Lugo’s first loss came to Jair Quintero via a six-round split decision in 2015.
His second defeat was at the hands of Edwin Palomares by sixth-round TKO in 2021 and he was halted by Eduardo Hernandez in the seventh round in 2024. His latest setback was in his last outing when Edward Vazquez beat him by 10-round unanimous decision. Lugo’s lone draw was a 10-round affair with Mauricio Lara in 2024. Lugo captured the vacant WBC Fecarbox Featherweight Title in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Luis Guzman Rios and also has wins over Miguel Nunez and Gerardo Perez. He’s fought outside of Mexico just once and just 16 of his 33 opponents have had winning records.
Prediction……
Lopez may not be a KO artist but he definitely has heavy hands and a decent chin despite being stopped by Angelo Leo. Lugo has the height advantage here and I guess technically more power but he isn’t really a world class boxer like Lopez. Lopez’s aggressive and somewhat awkward style should do the trick here and I’m expecting him to eventually stop Lugo.
Lopez’s experience and style will lead him to victory.
