Francisco Rodriguez Jr. vs Angelino Cordova Preview May 30th, 2026

There’s a WBC Flyweight eliminator on tap this Saturday, May 30th when unbeaten Angelino Cordova of Venezuela takes on former WBO and IBF World Minimumweight Champion Francisco Rodriguez Jr of Mexico. The 12-rounder from San Diego, California should be available to stream somewhere via Borizteca Boxing such as on FIGHT.TV. Rodriguez last saw action in June when he beat Galal Yafai in England to win the WBC Interim Flyweight Title by unanimous decision. However the fight was changed to no-contest after Rodriguez failed his drug test. It was the second straight no contest for Rodriguez as he fought to an eight-round no decision with Josue Morales after originally being awarded a unanimous decision in November, 2024. In his last official bout four months earlier he halted Jorge Ignacio Villalobos in just 63 seconds. Cordova was last in the ring in August when he battled to a 12-round draw with Yankiel Rivera Figueroa after being dropped in round fojur and having a point deducted for rabbit punching. Cordova upset Angel Acosta for the vacant WBO International Flyweight Title via a 10-round unanimous decision in April, 2024 and then took on WBC Flyweight Champion Julio Cesar Martinez 11 months later. He was dropped twice in round three and lost a majority decision. However it was changed to a no-contest after Martinez failed a drug test.

  • Angelino Cordova +275
  • Francisco Rodriguez Jr. -375

My Pick

Rodriguez Jr is 33 years old climbs and makes the ring walk with an official record of 39-6-1 with 27 Ko’s and has boxed 294 rounds since making his pro debut in 2010. He’s got pretty good power as 69.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last two. However he’s gone the distance in six of his past nine contests. His first loss came back in 2012 at the hands of Salvador Arias by six-round unanimous decision.

He was stopped by Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez in the seventh round in 2013; dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Donnie Nietes in a shot at the WBO Light Flyweight Title in 2015; lost a 12-round split decision to Moises Fuentes in 2015; was beaten by Kazuto Ioka by a 12-round unanimous decision in 2021 in a shot at the WBO Super Flyweight Belt and dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Junto Nakatani in 2022. Rodriguez’s lone draw was a 10-round affair with Jomar Fajardo in 2014.

Since turning pro, Rodriguez has also captured the vacant NABF Light Flyweight Title and the vacant, WBC Latino Super Flyweight Crown. However, when stepping up against the world’s elite boxers such as Gonzalez, Nietes, Fuentes, Ioka and Nakatani he’s come up just short but has been stopped just once thanks to his solid chin. Rodriguez stands 5-feet-4-inches with a 65-inch reach.

As for the 30-year-old Cordova, he makes the ring walk with a near-perfect official mark of 19-0-2 with 12 Ko’s and has boxed 117 rounds since making his pro debut in 2017 following an amateur career which saw him fight in the World Series of Boxing. He measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 65.5-inch reach which gives him a minimal half-inch edge in reach on Rodriguez. Cordova has enough power in his arsenal to cause some damage as 63.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s gone the distance in his last five fights with his last stoppage coming in February, 2021 when he halted Gregory in just 31 seconds.

But before he’s hailed as the next great thing in boxing, you should be aware that just six of Cordova’s 21 opponents entered the ring with a winning record. He took a gigantic leap in class against Angel Acosta, Julio Cesar Martinez and Yankiel Rivera though and proved he belongs with upper-level boxers. The first blemish on Cordova’s record was a four-round draw with Luis Guatache in 2017. He also won the vacant WBO Latino Light Flyweight Belt in 2022 with a 10-round split decision over Axel Vega and the vacant Venezuelan Belt in 2018 when he stopped Freddy Beleno in the eighth round.

Prediction…

Cordova has looked quite effective lately and should have some confidence and momentum going for him following his win over Angel Acosta and his performances against Julio Cesar Martinez and Yankiel Rivera. As for Rodriguez, he’s been banned from boxing in the UK for failing his drug test last year but for some reason the WBC is allowing him to fight this weekend. He looked fantastic against Gafai last year but how much of that performance can be attributed to the juice? This is a close call with no outcome coming as a surprise but I’ll give Cordova a close edge because of his recent results.

Cordova pulls it out in a tossup.
