Unbeaten Ernesto Mercado of Upland, California will be defending his WBO International Junior Welterweight Title for the third time when he meets Emmanuel Tagoe of Accra, Ghana this Saturday, August 15th. The 10-round tilt from Atlanta, Georgia can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Tagoe last fought 12 months ago when he beat Modibo Keita by 10-round unanimous decision. Mercado’s last fight resulted in a second-round stoppage of Juan Carlos Burgos in June to defend his title. Mercado won belt last December when he halted Antonio Moran in the sixth round.

The 24-year-old Mercado enters the ring with a perfect record of 19-0 with 18 Ko’s and has fought just 57 rounds since making his pro debut in July, 2021. Mercado enjoyed an extensive amateur career which saw him win the 2018 USA Youth National Championships, the 2018 USA Eastern Regional Youth Open and the 2018 USA Youth Golden Gloves Final. He also captured the 2016 USA Junior Open Final. Mercado was runner-up in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and was an alternate for the 2021 Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Power has been the name of the game so far for Mercado in the pro ranks as he’s stopped 18 of his 19 opponents for a highly-impressive knockout ratio of 94.7 per cent. The only man to go the distance with him has been veteran Xolisani Ndongeni, who went 10 rounds in a unanimous decision defeat in July, 2023. Mercado has six stoppages in the first round, six in the second, two in the third and sixth rounds and one in the fourth and seventh round. These include wins over Burgos, Jeremia Nakathila, Deiner Berrio, Hank Lundy, Jose Angulo, Jayson Velez and former world champion Jose Pedraza.
Mercado stopped Velez in the sixth round in October, 2022 to win the vacant NABF Super Lightweight Title and defended it against Lundy and Angulo. He measures 5-feet-10-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. Mercado now fights out of Pomona, California. He’s already fought some solid pros but and took a step up in class against Pedraza in January, 2025 and stopped him in the fourth round.
The 37-year-old Tagoe is a relative unknown to most boxing fans but the native of Accra enters the contest with a fine mark of 34-2 with 16 Kos. He has previously held the Ghanaian Featherweight Crown, WBO African Super Featherweight Title, the IBF Inter-Continental Super Featherweight Crown, the WBO African Lightweight Title, the WBO Global Lightweight Title and both the WBA and IBO International Lightweight Belts.
He also won the vacant IBO World Lightweight Title in December, 2016 by beating Mzonke Fana by unanimous decision. His first loss came at the hands of Lante Addy when he was reportedly stopped in the fifth round in his pro debut. He then reeled off 32 straight wins before dropping a wide 12-round unanimous decision to Ryan Garcia in April, 2022 after being dropped in the second round. Tagoe has fought just twice since then though as he didn’t return to the ring until over two years (26 months) later.
As far as power is concerned, 47.1 per cent of Taoe’s wins have come by stoppage. Tagoe stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with an unlisted reach, so gives up two inches in height to Mercado. He began boxing at the age of 15 but has fought outside of Africa just three times with all of those coming in America. His biggest wins have been against Fana, Oscar, Bravo, George Ashie, Allan Kamote, Carlo Magali, Fernando David Saucedo, Moses Paulus, Vyacheslav Gusev and Mason Menard. Tagoe has a pretty solid chin and will definitely need it come Saturday night.
Prediction…
There isn’t really a weak side to Mercado’s game as his power and boxing skills have simply been too much for most of his opponents so far. Tagoe is a solid pro but he’s 37 years old now and has been relatively inactive over the past four years. He can’t match Mercado in any area at this stage of his career and that’s why the odds are stacked against him. I’m expecting Mercado to earn another stoppage here and could become the first pro boxer to halt Tagoe. He then needs to take a step up in class against some young up-and-coming or already established prospects.
Mercado has the edge in power and is 13 years younger.
