My Pick
The 35-year-old Clarke is a southpaw who resides in England and enters the contest with a record of 11-2 with 8 Ko’s. He’s boxed 86 rounds since making his pro debut in February, 2022 following his lengthy amateur career. As an amateur, he fought in the World Series of Boxing, reached the semifinals of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, won the 2017 English National Elite Final as well as the 2016 English National Championship with a win over former WBO Cruiserweight Champion Chris Billam-Smith and captured a silver medal at the 2017 European Championships.
He also fought at the 2019 European Games, the 2019 World Championships where he reached the quarterfinals and at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. As a pro he’s been the distance five times; against Israel Duffus over eight rounds in 2023; over 10 rounds in a unanimous decision over Vasil Ducar in 2023 and against Efetobor Apochi over 10 rounds in 2024. However he then lost two in a row on points to Leonardo Mosquera and Viddal Riley before rebounding with his stoppage over Anthony Holloway in his last outing.
Clarke has pretty heavy hands as 72.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but he’s halted just one of his past four opponents. He was born in Montego Bay, moved to England at the age of 11 and stands just under 6-feet-tall with a 75.5-inch reach. He won the vacant IBF International Cruiserweight Title with his win over Ducar and added the vacant British Crown with an eighth-round KO over Ellis Zorro in May, 2024. He also has wins over former European Cruiserweight Champion Tommy McCarthy for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Cruiserweight Belt as well as David Jamieson and Jose Ulrich.
As for Massey, he’s a 33-year-old from Derbyshire and carries around a record of 23-3 with 13 Ko’s. He’s fought 127 rounds since making his pro debut in 2013 following an amateur career which saw him beat Chris Billam-Smith in the 2013 English National Championships. He measures 6-feet-4-inches with a 77-inch reach so stands 4.5-inches taller than Clarke with a 1.5-inch edge in reach. He’s boxed most of his pro career as a cruiserweight but moved up to heavyweight in 2023 when he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to former world champion Joseph Parker.
Massey won the vacant IBO Cruiserweight Belt in November, 2021 when he stopped Bilal Laggoune in the third round and earlier in his career he captured the vacant IBF European and vacant WBC Youth Silver Cruiserweight Titles. In 2024 he captured the Commonwealth and European Cruiserweight Crowns with a 12-round unanimous decision over Isaac Chamberlain. His first loss as a pro came against Richard Riakporhe via 12-round unanimous decision in a shot at the vacant British Cruiserweight Title in 2019 and was dropped in the 10th round of that fight. Massey has slightly above-average power as 56.5 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including five of his past six.
Prediction…
Massey has the edge in height and reach as well as pro experience but Clarke possesses more power and possibly a sturdier chin. Clarke is 35 years old now though and has struggled a bit lately. He may have just enough left in the tank to beat Massey here and keep his career going but a loss another loss at this stage could be a serious setback. This is a tossup but I’ll give Clarke the benefit of the doubt and assume he’ll realize how important this fight is to his career and figure he’ll come out swinging.
Clarke needs a win to extend his career.
