Andre Donovan vs Jason Moloney Preview April 23rd 2026

The vacant IBF Inter-Continental Bantamweight Title is on the line this Thursday, April 23rd as former WBO Bantamweight Champion Jason Moloney of Australia takes on American Andre Donovan. The 10-rounder takes place in Brisbane, Australia and can be seen live Down Under on Stan Sport. Moloney last fought in December when he stopped Herlan Gomez in the fourth round to halt a two-fight losing skid. Moloney’s previous two outings resulted in a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Tenshin Nasukawa in February, 2025 and a 12-round unanimous defeat to Yoshiki Takei seven months earlier to lose his WBO Belt. Both of those fights took place in Japan. Donovan was last in the ring a year ago when he stopped Jesus Segundo Martinez Carrascal in the third round.

My Pick

Donovan is a 29-year-old southpaw who resides in Ohio. He makes the ring walk with a mark of 12-2 with 8 Ko’s and has just 50 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut in 2021. As an amateur he reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 National Golden Gloves. Donovan measures 5-feet-3-inches tall but unfortunately he has an unlisted reach. As far as power is concerned he is above average as 66.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including four of his past five.

His first defeat came at the hands of John Lewus Jr via a four-round unanimous decision in 2021 in his second pro fight. He also lost his very next contest when Jay Stancil III also beat him by a four-round unanimous nod. Donovan’s 2022 bout with Alexander Castellano was called a no-contest after three rounds after Castellano couldn’t continue due to an accidental head butt. Ten of Donovan’s 14 opponents entered the ring with a winning record but he’ll be taking a step up in class against Moloney this weekend. It will also be his first pro bout outside of America.

The 35-year-old Moloney enters the ring with a mark of 28-4 with 20 Ko’s. His first defeat came at the hands of IBF World Champion Emmanuel Rodriguez of Puerto Rico in October, 2018 when he dropped a split decision and he was stopped by Naoya Inoue in the seventh round in October, 2020 in a shot at the WBA Super World, and IBF Bantamweight Titles. Moloney turned pro in 2014 after an amateur career and has boxed 200 rounds since. As a pro, he won the vacant Oriental and Pacific WBA Silver Super Bantamweight Title in 2017 and the vacant British Commonwealth Bantamweight Title in 2018.

Moloney added the vacant WBC Silver Bantamweight Belt in August, 2021 when he beat Joshua Greer Jr by a 10-round unanimous decision and then the vacant WBO International Bantamweight Crown in June, 2022 when he stopped Aston Palicte in the third round. Moloney has displayed solid power up to now as 71.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but he has gone the distance in six of his last seven fights. He had won four straight contests by stoppage until running into ‘The Monster’ Inoue from Japan however.

Moloney handled himself well in his first two world title shots, especially against Rodriguez when the fight could have gone either way for the IBF Belt. He finally won a world title in May, 2023 when he beat Vincent Astrolabio by majority decision for the vacant WBO Crown. He defended it by majority decision over Saul Sanchez but lost it two fights ago against Yoshiki Takei. Moloney stands 5-feet-5-inches tall with a 65-inch reach so has a two-inch height advantage on Donovan. He also has wins over Leonardo Baez and Dixon Flores.

Prediction…

Moloney has a lot of experience against tough opposition but he is now 25 years of age, six years older than Donovan. I’m expecting Donovan to put up a good fight if he lets his hands go but Moloney should have his hand raised in victory when it’s over, likely via a decision.

Moloney has the edge in experience and power.
