Australia’s Liam Wilson battles it out with former world champion Stephen Fulton of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this Saturday, July 25th. The 12-round junior lightweight bout from Sydney, Australia a can be seen live Down Under on Kayo Sports-Australia Main Event while fans in North America and the UK can catch it on Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view. Wilson last fought in January when he stopped Rodex Piala in the fourth round with a body shot to retain his WBO International Junior Lightweight Belt. Fulton lost his WBO and WBC Super Bantamweight Titles to Naoya Inoue via an eighth-round stoppage in 2023 but rebounded with a 10-round split decision over Carlos Castro and then earned a unanimous decision over Brandon Figueroa in a rematch to take his WBC Featherweight Title. Fulton had beaten Figueroa by controversial majority decision in 2021. Fulton moved up in weight in his last outing but was beaten by O’Shaquie Foster by wide unanimous decision in a shot at the interim WBC Lightweight Belt.

The 30-year-old Wilson, who fights out of Redcliffe, Australia, climbs through the ropes with a mark of 18-3 with 10 Ko’s and has boxed 133 rounds since making his pro debut in 2018. He had a solid amateur career before that as he made it to the quarterfinals of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won the 2017 Australian National Championship and 2016 Australian Golden Gloves. He also captured the 2013 Australian Youth National Championship and fought in several other top-grade tournaments. Wilson measures just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and carries above-average power in his fists as 55.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage.
He has stopped his last two opponents but had halted just one of his previous eight. His power shouldn’t be taken lightly though as he nearly pulled off an upset against Emanuel Navarrete in 2023 when he dropped him in the fourth round in a shot at the vacant WBO Super Featherweight Belt. Navarrete was the recipient of a long, controversial count by referee Chris Flores as video replays reportedly clocked Navarrete has having 27 seconds to recover from the knockdown after spitting out his mouthpiece. Wilson was then stopped five rounds later.
Since turning pro Wilson has won the vacant WBO International, IBF Youth, Australian, and WBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight Belts. Wilson was stopped in the fifth round by Joe Noynay in July 2021 in his first shot at the WBO Asia Pacific Title after being dropped in the first and fourth rounds but stopped Noynay in the second round of their rematch eight months later. Noynay missed weight in that fight and the belt was on the line for Wilson only. After losing to Navarrete, he bounced back with a 10-round unanimous decision over Carlos Maria Alanis for the vacant WBO International Super Featherweight Title.
He then beat Jackson Jon England by 10-round unanimous decision before being stopped by Oscar Valdez in the seventh round in a shot at the WBO Interim Super Featherweight Title in March, 2024. He rebounded again with an eight-round KO and a 10-round unanimous decision in a pair of wins over Youssef Dib. He then halted Ayrton Giminez in the 10th round for the vacant WBO International Junior Lightweight Belt and defended it by stopping both Jorge Santana and Rodex Piala in the fourth round.
The 32-year-old Fulton has fought 185 rounds since making his pro debut in 2014 and enters the bout with a record of 23-2 with 8 Ko’s. He’s not known as a power puncher or heavy hitter by any means as just 34.8 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage and he’s halted just three of his past 13 opponents. As for his chin, he was stopped by Inoue and dropped by Carlos Castro. Fulton, who’s regarded as a highly-skilled boxer with speed and excellent footwork, measures just over 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 70.5-inch reach. He gives up three inches in height to Wilson.
Just one of his first seven opponents had a winning record but since then he’s managed to defeat Brandon Figueroa twice as well as Castro, Danny Roman, Angelo Leo, Joshua Greer Jr, Luis Rosario. Adam Lopez, Jesus Ahumada and German Meraz. Fulton’s amateur record was a reported 75-15 and he also participated in the World Series of Boxing. His first world title triumph came in May, 2019 when he won the IBO World Super Bantamweight Title via a wide 12-round unanimous decision over Paulus Ambunda.
Fulton then captured the WBO Inter-Continental Belt by 12-round unanimous decision over Arnold Khegai in January, 2020. A year later he added the WBO World Title with another unanimous decision, this time over Angelo Leo. Next up, in November, 2021, Fulton added the WBC Belt to his collection when he edged Figueroa by a highly controversial majority decision after being outlanded 314 to 269 and being outpunched 1,060 to 726. In addition, Fulton outlanded Figueroa in just two of the 12 rounds. Of course, those belts were then lost to Inoue in Tokyo but Fulton bounced back with a split decision over Castro and a unanimous nod over Figueroa before losing to O’Shaquie Foster.
Prediction…
Fulton is a slick boxer with below-average power while Wilson is more of a banger with a good left hook and powerful body shots. However, it’s going to be a bit difficult to catch Fulton due to his fine footwork and movement. Fulton definitely has the better skills and I believe they’ll be enough for him to earn a victory.
