Douglas Ataide vs Demetrius Andrade Preview July 24th, 2023
Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, a former two-weight world champion, returns to the ring for the first time in almost three years as he takes on Douglas Ataide this Friday, July 24th. The 10-round super middleweight tilt from Uncasville, Connecticut can be seen on DAZN. Andrade last fought in November, 2023 when he was stopped in the sixth round by David Benavidez in a shot at the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Crown. His mother passed away soon after and he eventually inked a deal with CES Boxing to get his career back on track. The former WBO Junior Middleweight and Middleweight Champion from Rhode Island is now 38 years of age though. Ataide, who hails from Sao, Paulo, Brazil, last fought in February when he stopped Matheus Meireles Dos Santos in just 136 seconds to halt a two-fight losing skid.

The 35-year-old Ataide turned pro in 2011 and has 130 rounds of experience to his name. He makes the ring walk with a mark of 20-5-1 with 11 Ko’s and is nicknamed ‘The good Boy.’ Ataide stands six-feet-tall with a 75-inch reach and carries slightly above-average power in his punches as 55 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage including three of his last four. However his record over the last seven fights is just 4-3. He did win the vacant Brazilian Junior Middleweight Title in 2012 however.
Ataide’s first defeat came in 2013 when he was disqualified against Jorge Sebastian Heiland in the sixth round in a shot at the vacant WBC Latin Middleweight Belt. He was then stopped in the fifth round by Ryota Murata in Japan in 2015 and was halted by Daniel Valdivia in just 57 seconds in 2017 in an attempt at the NABF Junior Middleweight Title. His next defeat came at the hands of Giovanni De Carolis by points over 10 rounds in 2023 and he was stopped by Kemahl Russell in the fourth round in November, 2024 and he didn’t return to the ring again until this February. His lone draw was a 12-round affair with John Anderson Carvalho de Souza in 2014.
The 38-year-old Andrade won the vacant WBO Middleweight Crown in October, 2018 via a unanimous decision over Walter Kautondokwa and defended it against Artur Akavov by 12th-round stoppage in January, 2019. He then defended it against Macviej Sulecki by unanimous decision, stopped Luke Keeler, decisioned Liam Williams and stopped Jason Quigley. He defended the title five times but gave given it up to head north in weight by eight pounds.
Andrade was also briefly the WBA Super Welterweight Champion in 2017 after beating Jack Culcay by unanimous decision. He enters the ring with a fine mark as he’s 32-1 with 19 Ko’s with his lone defeat coming at the hands of Benavidez in his last outing three years ago. Andrade’s a southpaw who also measures six-feet tall and has a with a 73.5-inch reach, so he gives up 1.5-inches in reach to Ataide. Andrade possesses a lot of talent but fell short when stepping up in class against Benavidez.
The biggest wins for Andrade have been against Quigley, Williams, Sulecki, Culcay, Willie Nelson, Alantez Fox and Vanes Martirosyan by split decision in 2013 to win the vacant WBO Super Welterweight Title. Andrade defended that WBO belt against Brian Rose by seventh-round stoppage the next year, but gave up the title a few months later when he wouldn’t take on mandatory challenger Jermell Charlo. Due to promotional problems, Andrade was then inactive for a year before winning the vacant title against Kautondokwa.
It could be argued that Andrade’s lone world-class opponent has been Benavidez even though he’s a former 2008 U.S. Olympian who enjoyed an excellent amateur career. He turned pro shortly after the Olympics in 2008, has fought 206 rounds since and also has wins over Grady Brewer, Freddy Hernandez and Saul Duran. Andrade possesses some fine boxing skills but isn’t exactly the most exciting fighter out there even though he’s got better-than-average power with a current knockout ratio of 59.4 per cent. He’s also gone the distance in six of his last 10 outings and has stopped three of his past seven opponents.
Prediction…
Andrade has the better boxing skills and more power than Ataide as well as experience. It’s his comeback fight after a three-year absence so it’s understandable to take on a lesser-known opponent. Andrade will test his skills out to see what he has left in the tank and I believe he’ll have enough to beat Ataide, but he may go the distance to do it if his timing is off.
Andrade is the more polished boxer.
