Emanuel Navarrete vs Charly Suarez Preview May 10th, 2025

Emanuel Navarrete will be defending his WBO Super Featherweight Title this Saturday, May 10th when he battles it out with unbeaten Charly Suarez of the Philippines. Navarrete last put his belt on the line against former WBO Featherweight and WBC Junior Lightweight Champion Oscar Valdez in a rematch in December and stopped him in the sixth round. Navarrete and Valdez first squared off in a slugfest in August, 2023 with Navarrete winning by unanimous decision. This week’s 12-rounder from San Diego, California can be seen live in America on the full ESPN platform while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports Action. And those in Canada can catch it on TSN+. Navarrete won the vacant WBO Super Featherweight Crown after getting up from the canvas in the fourth round to stop Liam Wilson in the ninth round in February, 2023. He beat Valdez and drew with Robson Conceicao in his first two defences before attempting to win a world title in a fourth weight division last May when Denis Berinchyk beat him by split decision for the vacant WBO Lightweight Belt. Suarez stopped Jorge Castaneda in the third round in his last outing in September.

My Pick

The 30-year-old Navarrete won the WBO World Super Bantamweight title by beating Isaac Dogboe by unanimous decision in December, 2018 then stopped him in the 12th round in their rematch five months later. He defended it four times with the fifth defence being called a no-contest after he stopped Uriel Lopez in the sixth round because there was no boxing commission present during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Navarrete moved up in weight and captured the vacant WBO Featherweight Crown in 2020 with a unanimous decision over Ruben Villa and defended it by stopping Christopher Diaz in the 12th round before decisioning Joet Gonzalez and then stopping Eduardo Baez in six. He then won a title in a third weight division in 2023 with his ninth-round TKO over Liam Wilson. The recent activity sees Navarrete enter the ring with an official mark of 39-2-1 with 32 Ko’s. He has plenty of power in his punches as 82.1 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage and his power doesn’t seem to fade in the later rounds. He has gone the distance in five of his last nine fights though.

Navarrete stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 72-inch reach, turned pro back in 2012 when he was just 17 years old and has boxed 246 rounds since. His first defeat came in his sixth pro bout when he came out on the wrong end of a four-round unanimous decision to Daniel Argueta. Navarrete also owns wins over the likes of Dennis Contreras, Luis Orozco and Glenn Porras earlier in his career. Even though Wilson dropped him in their 2023 battle, he’s proven to have a pretty solid chin so far.

The 36-year-old Suarez owns a perfect mark of 18-0 with 10 Ko’s and has 123 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2019 after an extensive amateur career. As an amateur he won numerous medals and fought at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He won a silver at the 2014 Asian Games; gold at the 2009, 2011 and 2019 Southeast Asian Games as well as a bronze in 2017; silver at the 2014 Kazakhstan President Cup; silver at the 2011 Indonesia President Cup and silver at the 2011 Tammer Tournament.

Suarez possesses decent power as 55.6 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage, including three of his past five. He measures 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 74-inch reach which sees him give up an inch in height to Navarrete while having a two-inch edge in reach. He won the vacant Filipino Lightweight Belt in his second pro fight when he stopped Justin Cabarles in the second round and added the vacant Super Featherweight Title two fights later when he halted Dave Barlas in the third stanza. Suarez captured the vacant IBF Asian Super Featherweight Crown in 2022 by stopping Defry palulu in the second round.

He wasn’t finished there however as Suarez won the WBC Asian, the IBO Inter-Continental, and the vacant IBF Inter-Continental Super Featherweight Belts in March 2023 when he stopped Paul Fleming in the 12th round. He also has wins over Luis Coria, Yohan Vasquez, Carlo Magali, Mark John Yap and Jon Jon Estrada so it’s safe to say Suarez is taking a big step up in class this weekend. This will also be his fourth straight fight in the United States.

Prediction…

Navarrete is an aggressive fighter with plenty of power but is basically a volume puncher who typically stops opponents with an accumulation of blows. He’s been on the canvas before but has a solid chin. He does struggle somewhat against superior boxers and Suarez has a wealth of amateur experience under his belt. Navarrete’s power usually pulls him through and that could be the case again this weekend but Suarez’s style will mean it won’t be easy to accomplish. This should be a close fight but as long as Navarrete continues to throw punches in bunches he should be able to pull it out.

Navarrete is naturally more aggressive with more power.
