Jessie Magdaleno vs Rico Ramos Preview Mar. 23rd
Former WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Jessie Magdaleno of Las Vegas will be back in the ring for the first time since losing his title by 11th-round stoppage to Isaac Dogboe last April. Magdaleno will be taking on former WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Rico Ramos of Los Angeles, California at the Hangar in Costa Mesa, California this Saturday, March 23rd. The 10-round featherweight bout can be seen live in the USA on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes while fans in Canada can catch it on TSN 3. Ramos last fought in September when he beat Daniel Olea by an eight-round unanimous decision.

Magdaleno, a southpaw, won his title in November, 2016 when he beat Nonito Donaire by an impressive unanimous decision. He defended the crown against Adeilson Dos Santos by second round knockout five months later and then lost the title to Dogboe in an exciting contest. The 27-year-old is 25-1 with 18 Kos to his name. He has 112 rounds under his belt since turning pro in 2010. Magdaleno has beaten the likes of Donaire, Dos Santos, Erik Ruiz, Roberto Castaneda, Luis Maldonado and Raul Hidalgo with Donaire definitely being the best of the bunch.
Magdaleno stands 5-feet-4-inches tall and has a 66-inch reach. He’s also got quite a bit of power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 69 per cent. Even though he’s got a good knockout ratio, Magdaleno also has some good boxing skills and enjoyed a fine amateur career with a reported record of 120-16. He was a Golden Gloves and National champion back in 2009 and learned lot in the amateur ranks. He’s handled the pro game well up to now due to his power and overall ring generalship.
Ramos is 31 years old and has a mark of 30-5 with 14 Kos. He turned pro in 2008 and has boxed 213 rounds since. Ramos also had a fine amateur career and was an Olympic alternate in the past. He won the National PAL championship in 2007 and was the runner up at the U.S. National Championships the same year. Since turning pro he’s won the WBA-NABA, and WBO NABO Youth Super Bantamweight Titles. His biggest catch was claiming the WBA world title in 2011 by stopping Akifumu Shimoda in the seventh round in July of 2011.
Ramos then lost the title six months later in his first defence when Guillermo Rigondeaux stopped him in the sixth round. He’s also lost decisions to Ronny Rios, Oscar Gonzalez and Jesus Cuellar and was stopped by Claudio Marrero in 2015. The loss to Cuellar was for the interim WBA Featherweight Title. Ramos has also beaten the likes of Christian Esquivel, Juan Antonio Lopez, Erik Ruiz, Justin Savi, Carlos Velasquez, Reynaldo Lopez and Heriberto Ruiz.
As far as power goes, Ramos isn’t really a heavy hitter and owns a current knockout ratio of 40 per cent. He stands 5-feet-5-inches tall and has a reach of 67 inches. This gives him a slight one-inch reach and height advantage over Magdaleno. Ramos has won six fights in a row with his last defeat being at the hands of Marrero in July of 2015. He has good boxing skills, but a bit of a shaky chin.
Prediction…
Magdaleno gave it his all against Dogboe last year, but was stopped late in the slugfest. He’s taking on a pretty good opponent in his first fight back in Ramos, but Ramos doesn’t have that much power. Still, he has some fine skills and this should be a good test for both of them. I’m expecting Magdaleno to get back on the winning track on Saturday though.
I’ll go with Magdaleno’s power and speed.
