Premier League Betting Options
There are three popular Premier League bets that are usually featured for each match. These are the moneyline (1×2), handicap (spread), and total (over/under). Below I will look at each of these bets using an Arsenal vs Tottenham game from this season for the examples:
Moneyline
Also known as the 1×2, the moneyline bet is simply a wager on the outcome of the match. You can bet on whether Team A will win, Team B will win, or the match will finish in a draw. The risk vs reward for each outcome is dictated by the odds.
In this example, Arsenal is a -145 favorite to win the game, which means a $145 bet on Arsenal would win $100 (payout $245). Tottenham is a +340 underdog to win the game, so a $100 bet on Tottenham would win $340 (payout $440). In the above example, a draw also has odds of +340.
Spread
The spread, also known as the handicap, is a wager that is meant to even the likelihood of the two sides of the bet, by handicapping the game in the underdogs favor.
In the above example Arsenal is a -0.75 goal favorite according to the handicap. This means half of a spread bet on Arsenal would be applied to the -0.5 handicap and half to a -1 goal handicap. If Arsenal wins the match by 2 or more goals then handicap bets on Arsenal would win. If the game ends in a draw or Tottenham wins, then Tottenham spread bets would be the winners. If Arsenal wins by exactly one goal, half the stake of Arsenal spread bets would win, and half would push (and vice versa for Tottenham spread bets).
Total
The total is a bet on the number of goals to be scored by both teams combined in the match. The oddsmaker sets a total and you can bet on the over or the under.
In the above example the total is set at 3.25 goals. This means half of the wager is applied to a total of 3, and half to a total of 3.5. If 4 or more goals are scored then the over bets would win. If 2 or fewer goals are scored then under bets would win. If exactly 3 goals are scored half the stake would push, and half of over bets would lose, while half the stake of under bets would win.
