My Pick
The 26-year-old Zeuge has a near-perfect record of 22-0-1 along with 12 Kos. He won the title by a 12th-round knockout in a rematch with Giovanni De Carolis in November of 2016 after fighting to a draw with him just four months earlier. He then the defended the crown against Ekpo by a five-round technical decision, Paul Smith by a unanimous decision and then Ekpo again. Zeuge turned pro back in 2012 and has 159 rounds under his belt since then.
The native of Berlin had a distinguished amateur career and has also won the WBO Youth, IBF International, and Global Boxing Union World Super Middleweight Titles. Zeuge stands just over 5-feet-10-inches tall and has an unlisted reach. He isn’t known as a powerful puncher with a current knockout ratio of 52 per cent, but can definitely take an opponent out. He’s taken on mainly fellow Europeans during his career with all of his bouts being held in Germany. The only familiar names to most boxing fans are probably Smith and Ekpo.
Zeuge is still quite young and has fine boxing skills to go along with a solid chin, but he’s basically unknown outside of Europe. Fielding is 30 years old and has been beaten just once as a pro. He climbs through the ropes with an impressive record of 26-1 along with 14 Kos. Fielding’s 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 75-inch reach so has close to three inches in height over Zeuge. He also had a fine amateur career and has boxed 123 rounds as a pro since making his debut in 2010.
Since then he’s one several titles such as the English, Commonwealth, WBA Inter-Continental, WBC International and British Super Middleweight Titles. Fielding hasn’t exactly taken on the cream of the crop in his division either with his biggest wins coming over the likes of Luke Blackledge, Charles Adamu, Brian Vera, Christopher Rebrasse, John Ryder and David Brophy. His lone loss came at the hands of Callum Smith by way of a first-round TKO in November, 2015, so his chin may be a little suspect.
Prediction…
This is a pretty good European matchup, but outside of that continent it’s not really going to garner the interest of many boxing fans as a world title fight. It could still be a pretty good one though, but I’m looking for the younger Zeuge to successfully defend his world title once again for the fourth time and a stoppage wouldn’t be out of the question.
Zeuge’s youthfulness and experience should be the difference.
