My Pick

The 32-year-old Porter won the vacant WBC title in September, 2018 when he beat Danny Garcia by unanimous decision then defended it against Yordenis Ugas by split decision. Ugas. He is 30-3-1 with 17 Kos and is also a former IBF Welterweight Champion. He lost that title via a close majority decision to Kell Brook of England in August of 2014 with his other defeat being a unanimous decision to WBA Champ Keith Thurman in June, 2016. His draw was a 10-round affair against Julio Diaz in 2012. Porter’s a blue-collar boxer with a lot of energy to burn, but isn’t known as a big knockout puncher.

He’s scored his share of stoppages though with a current knockout ratio of 50 per cent. Porter stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 69.5-inch wingspan. He enjoyed a fine amateur career before turning pro in 2008 and has 231 rounds under his belt since then. His best victories have been against Andre Berto, Adrien Broner, Julio Diaz in a rematch, Paulie Malignaggi, Devon Alexander, Phil Lo Greco, Erick Bone and Alfonso Gomez. Porter has a pretty good chin, but Broner and Spence did manage to drop him late in their fights. Porter’s been taken the distance in 12 of his last 15 contests.

Formella is a 33-year-old southpaw who resides from Hamburg and carries around a perfect record of 22-0 with 10 Kos. He’s boxed 145 rounds since making his pro debut in 2014 and has average power with a current knockout ratio of 45.5 per cent. He’s just over 5-feet-7-inches tall with an unlisted reach so is basically the same height as Porter. This will be his first fight in America and his first outside of Europe. So far he hasn’t faced any legitimate world contenders on his boxing journey.

Since turning pro, Formella has captured the IBO Continental Super Welterweight Title when he picked himself up from the canvas to come back and beat Dennis Krieger by 10-round unanimous decision in 2017. He won the WBO European Super Welterweight Crown and the IBO Inter-Continental Title in 2018 when he stopped Angelo Frank in the seventh round. The WBO Global Welterweight Belt was added to his collection in 2018 when he beat Betuel Ushona by 12-round unanimous decision and he took the IBO World Title with a 12-round unanimous decision against Thulani Mbenge in July of 2019.

Prediction…

This will be a big step up in class for Formella as Porter’s a former world champ and a highly-skilled welterweight with a ton of energy. Porter’s key to winning as usual is to throw a high volume of punches every round while being wary of counter shots. Formella should have his hands full here and I’m going with Porter.

Porter’s experience and aggressiveness should prevail.
