Sandor Martin vs Arblin Kaba Preview July 15th, 2023

Sandor Martin of Spain is back in the ring this Saturday, July 15th as he clashes with Arblin Kaba of Albania in an eight-round Super Lightweight tilt in Verbania Italy. Martin last saw action in December when he dropped a 10-round split decision to Teofimo Lopez in a shot at the WBO International Super Lightweight Title after decking Lopez in the second round. Kaba, who fights out of Italy, beat Mikheil Gabinashvili on points over six rounds in his last outing in December.

  • Sandor Martin -2000

My Pick

Martin wasn’t very well known outside of Europe, where he used to be the former European Super Lightweight Champion, until he shocked the boxing world by beating former world champion Mikey Garcia by 10-round majority decision in October, 2021 He certainly made a name for himself in that fight and proved it was no fluke as he followed up with a 10-round unanimous decision win over Jose Felix and the controversial loss to Teofimo Lopez.

Martin is a 29 year-old southpaw with an impressive mark of 40-3 with 13 Ko’s and has boxed 284 rounds since making his pro debut in 2011. He also has experience as a kickboxer, stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. The Spaniard doesn’t really possess much in the way of power in his fists though as his current knockout ratio is just 30.2 per cent. He won the Spanish Super Lightweight Title in 2014 with a technical decision over Ignacio Mendoza and first captured the European Belt in 2015 via a unanimous decision over Samuele Esposito.

He then added the WBC Youth Silver Super Lightweight Title in 2015 when he stopped Gyorgy Mizsei in the fourth round. His first pro loss came at the hands of Alexandre Lepelley by an eight-round decision in 2013. He also lost to Anthony Yigit by12-round unanimous decision in 2017 when he lost the European Belt. He regained the vacant title two years later though when he beat Andrea Scarpa after the ninth round.

Arblin Kaba is also 29 years old and makes the ring walk with a record of 15-3-1 with just 2 Ko’s. He has 114 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2016 following a brief amateur career which saw him reach the quarterfinals of the 2016 Italian Students National Championships. Kaba measures 5-feet-10-inches tall and also has an unlisted reach so has a 2.5-inch height advantage on Martin.

As far as power goes, Kaba brings even fewer fireworks to the ring than Martin as his current knockout ratio clocks in at just 10.5 per cent. His first pro loss came at the hands of Mohamred Khalladi by seventh-round stoppage in November, 2020 after dropping Khalladi in the second round. His next fight five months later ended in a four-round technical draw against Luciano Randazzo and he then went three fights in a row without a win as he was halted by Rohan Polanco in the third round in his next outing in May, 2021.

Kaba bounced back with a 10-round unanimous decision win over Daniele Zagatti in November, 2021 to defend his Italian Super Lightweight Crown but was on the losing end again just four months later when he lost the belt to Charlemagne Metonyekpon via a 10-round unanimous decision. In July, 2022 Kaba fought Daniele Zagatti again and captured the by 10-round unanimous decision.

Prediction…

This appears to be a stay-busy fight for Martin and there’s a good chance it goes the distance as neither boxer possesses much in the way of power. Martin has world-class skills and a solid chin while both of Kaba’s losses came via stoppage. Anything can happen in a fight though but I’m pretty certain that Martin will emerge here with a victory.

Martin has a big edge in skills and a solid chin.
