Jose Armando Resendiz vs Jaime Munguia Preview May 3rd, 2025

Former WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Jaime Munguia of Mexico is hoping to lift the WBA Super Middleweight Title from fellow countryman Jose Armando Resendiz this Saturday, May 2nd. The 12-round tilt can be seen live on Amazon Prime PPV from Las Vegas, Nevada. Munguia last fought in May when he beat Bruno Surace of France via a unanimous decision in a rematch. Munguia and the light-hitting Surace first met in December, 2024 in Mexico when Munguia dropped Surace in the second round and was well ahead on points when Surace stunned him with a perfect right hand to knock him out. Munguia had stopped Erik Bazinyan in the 10th round three months earlier and before that he suffered his first pro defeat when he dropped a unanimous decision to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a shot at the undisputed Super Middleweight Title and was decked in the fourth round. Resendiz last saw action in May when he upset Caleb Plant via a 12-round split decision for the WBA Interim Belt.

My Pick
Resendiz is 27 years old and has boxed 101 rounds since making his pro debut in 2018. He makes his ring walk with a record of 16-2 with 11 Ko’s and has been fighting as a super middleweight and middleweight recently after starting his career as a light heavyweight. He stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 69-inch so gives up two inches in height and three inches in reach to Munguia. His first defeat as a pro came at the hands of Marcos Hernandez by 10-round unanimous decision in September, 2021 after being dropped in the second round. He was also beaten by eighth-round TKO by Elijah Garcia in September, 2023.
As far as power is concerned, Resendiz appears to have enough of it to cause some damage as 68.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including 11 of his last 13. However he has lost two of his past six fights. In addition, his quality of opposition hasn’t been the greatest as just 10 of his 18 opponents have entered the ring with a winning record. Of course, he did beat Plant though in his first legitimate test. Resendiz has also beaten the likes of former world champion Jarrett Hurd as well as Heber Rondon, Quilisto Madera, Michel Rosales Hernandez and Jaime Hernandez Lopez.
The 29-year-old Munguia definitely likes to stay active as this will be his 48th fight since turning pro in July, 2013 when he was a teenager. He enters the contest with a fine mark of 45-2 with 35 Ko’s with his first defeat coming at the hands of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez after being momentarily dropped in the fourth round. Munguia first made a name for himself against Sadam Ali when he stepped up in class and stopped him in five rounds in May, 2018 for the WBO Jr. Middleweight Title.
He then defended his belt against Liam Smith, Brandon Cook, Takeshi Inoue, Dennis Hogan and Patrick Allotey before moving up to middleweight. At 160 lbs, he stopped Gary O’Sullivan in the 11th round in 2019 and then halted Tureano Johnson after six to win the vacant WBO Inter Continental Middleweight Title. He stopped Kamil Szeremeta after six rounds before beating Gabriel Rosado by unanimous decision and then halting D’Mitrius Ballard, Jimmy Kelly and Gonzalo Coria.
Some of those fights highlighted Munguia’s defensive shortcomings but that’s a part of what makes him so exciting. The other part of his fan-friendly style is the fact he has dynamite in his fists as 77.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. Munguia reportedly went 128-10 in the amateurs and now has 239 rounds of pro experience under his belt. He entered the title fight against Sadam Ali in 2018 as a hungry boxer who wanted to make a name for himself on the world stage and he certainly did that.
However, he struggled against Dennis Hogan and Takeshi Inoue as he went the distance with both of them and took quite a few shots. He also had trouble making the 160 lb weight limit and after several outings as a middleweight the 6-foot-tall Munguia took his 72-inch reach up to super middleweight against Kelly but then moved back to middleweight to fight Gonzalo Coria but moved north again. He beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder at super middleweight before meeting Alvarez and then stopping Erik Bazinyan in 10 rounds. Munguia appears to be staying at 168 lbs for the time being but could move back down to middleweight.
Prediction…
Munguia has been dropped and stopped recently so that’s something to keep in kind as Resendiz has pretty good power. He also has fine boxing skills or he wouldn’t have been Celeb Plant on points. Mungia has more experience against better opposition and if he lets his hands go he should be able to leave the ring with the belt. Of course, his chin will have to hold out to do so.
Munguia has the experience, power and aggressiveness.
