MY PICK

The 29-year-old Lubin is a southpaw who has an impressive record of 26-2 with 18 Ko’s. He possesses a fair amount of power in his speedy fists as 69.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s halted 12 of his last 19 opponents. Lubin, who stands 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 74.5-inch reach, turned pro in November, 2013 and has 136 rounds of experience under his belt since then. His stiffest test came in October, 2017 when he faced Jermell Charlo in a shot at the WBC Jr. Middleweight Title, but was stopped in the very first round.

He was also stopped in his second defeat as he lasted until the ninth round of a slugfest against Sebastian Fundora in a shot at the WBC Interim Super Welterweight Belt in April, 2022. Lubin was down in the second round while Fundora was dropped in the seventh. That defeat snapped a six-fight winning streak and he bounced back with a fifth-round TKO over Luis Arias in his next outing and the decision over Ramos jr in his last contest. Lubin has also beaten the likes of Ishe Smith, Alexis Camacho, Orlando Lora, Norberto Gonzalez, Daniel Sandoval, Ivan Montero, Juan Ubaldo Cabrera and Jorge Cota.

In addition, he beat Terrell Gausha by 12-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBC Silver Super Welterweight Title in September, 2020 and defended it nine months later by stopping Jeison Rosario in the sixth round. Lubin still has plenty of potential and is hoping to earn another world title shot, making this fight against Holmes a must-win. Lubin had a fine amateur career as he was a national Golden Gloves Champion as a welterweight in 2013. He also captured the WBC Fecarbox Super Welterweight Title in 2014.

Holmes Jr is 30 years old and also a southpaw. He’s boxed 90 rounds since turning pro in 2016 and makes the ring walk with a perfect record of 17-0 with 6 Ko’s. As an amateur, he reached the final of the 2016 Michigan State Golden Gloves Final – Open Division and the semifinals of the 2015 USA National Golden Gloves. He also competed in the World Series of Boxing, won the 2015 USA National Championships and fought Lubin as an amateur in the 2013 USA National Golden Gloves Final, but lost on points over three rounds.

As far as power is concerned, Holmes is lacking in that area as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 35.3 per cent and he’s gone the distance in five of his past six bouts. At 6-feet-2-inches tall with a 74.5-inch wingspan, Holmes has the same reach as Lubin but is three inches taller. He captured the vacant IBF USBA Junior Middleweight Title in 2023 with an eight-round technical split decision over Wendy Toussaint and has defended it twice against Hugo Noriega and Marlon Harrington. He also has wins over Ismael Villarreal, Vernon Brown and Jose Antonio Abreu.

PREDICTION…

Lubin bounced back from the brutal war against Fundora with impressive wins over Luis Arias and Ramos Jr. but hasn’t fought in 20 months so he could be quite rusty. Holmes is a fine boxer but lacks power and is stepping up in class. Lubin has the edge in experience and power and I’ve got a feeling that Lubin will beat Holmes Jr again, just like he did in the amateurs.

A close fight but Lubin’s experience, power and skills are pretty solid.
