My Pick
Smith is 28 years old and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 17-0 with 13 Ko’s and has boxed 99 rounds since making his pro debut in 2019. As an amateur, he won the 2018 ABA Championships as a junior welterweight, captured a silver medal at the 2014 European Youth Championships and a bronze at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games as a lightweight. He also fought at the 2013 World Junior Championships and reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Youth Championships. Smith also competed for the World Series of Boxing from 2016 to 2018 for the British Lionhearts.
As a pro, Smith also won the vacant British Junior Welterweight Title in 2021 when he stopped Lee Appleyard in the sixth round. He added the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Junior Welterweight Belt the same year by beating Brian Pelaez by 10-round unanimous decision and took the vacant WBC International Silver Junior Welterweight Belt in 2022 when he stopped Ray Moylette in the 10th and final round. He won the vacant British Title again in 2022 by halting Sam O’Maison in the sixth round.
Smith measures just under 5-feet-10-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. However, as far as power is concerned, he has plenty of it as 76.5 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage, but he has been forced to go the distance in two of his last five fights. Even though he’s a solid pro with good skills and power, Smith took a big step up in class last year as Jose Zepeda was the first highly-ranked contender he faced.
The 35-year-old Germain hails from Montreal, Quebec and climbs through the ropes with a mar of 26-2-1 and has boxed 198 rounds since making his pro debut back in 2015 following an amateur career which saw him win the 2008 Canadian Junior National Championships 64kg Final and participate in the 2015 Canadian Amateur Elite Nationals Championships. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information for Germain so we don’t know how he stacks up size-wise against Smith.
But as far as his power goes, Germain comes in second best as just 42.3 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage. He’s stopped his last two opponents however after going the distance in five of his six previous bouts. His first loss came at the hands of Uriel Perez by fifth-round stoppage in 2019 and he was halted by Yves Ulysse Jr in the seventh stanza in 2020 in a shot at the vacant NABF Junior Welterweight Belt.
Germain’s lone draw was a 10-round affair with Steve Claggett in 2019 to defend his IBF North American Junior Welterweight Title while attempting to take Claggett’s IBF International Title. Germain won the vacant IBF North American Belt in 2018 via a unanimous 10-round decision over Christian Uruzquieta. The Canadian also has wins over Juan Garcia Mendez, Miguel Zumudio, Carlos Jiminez, Steven Wilcox, Gilberto Meza and Jose Lopez. His 2023 win over Wilcox was for the vacant IBF Inter-Continent Junior Welterweight Belt.
Prediction…
Smith is a fan-friendly boxer with quire a bit of power and is improving with each outing. He’s also seven year younger than Germain. Smith tops Germain in just about every department including chin and power. Smith should be also be entering his prime now and needs to be aggressive and land with authority. Considering Smith’s also fighting at home, I think he’ll have no problem doing enough to beat Germain with a stoppage being a good bet.
Smith has much more power than Germain and is seven years younger.
