My Pick

The 34-year-old Clarke is a southpaw who resides in England and enters the contest with a fine record of 10-1 with 7 Ko’s. He’s boxed 70 rounds since making his pro debut in February, 2022 following his lengthy amateur career. As an amateur, he fought in the World Series of Boxing, reached the semifinals of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, won the 2017 English National Elite Final as well as the 2016 English National Championship with a win over former WBO Cruiserweight Champion Chris Billam-Smith and captured a silver medal at the 2017 European Championships.

He also fought at the 2019 European Games, the 2019 World Championships where he reached the quarterfinals and at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. As a pro he’s been the distance just four times; against Israel Duffus over eight rounds in February, 2023; over 10 rounds in a unanimous decision over Vasil Ducar in September, 2023; Efetobor against Apochi over 10 rounds last August and against Mosquera in his last outing. Clarke has pretty heavy hands with a current knockout ratio of 70 per cent but has been taken the distance in his last two bouts and in four of his past seven.

Clarke, who was born in Montego Bay, moved to England at the age of 11 and stands just under 6-feet-tall with an unlisted reach. He won the vacant IBF International Cruiserweight Title with his win over Ducar and added the vacant British Crown with an eighth-round KO over Ellis Zorro this May. He also has wins over former European Cruiserweight Champion Tommy McCarthy for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Cruiserweight Belt as well as David Jamieson and Jose Ulrich.

The 27-year-old Riley of London, makes the ring walk with an unblemished record of 12-0 with 7 Ko’s. He turned pro back in 2018 after a good amateur career which saw him reportedly go 41-8. He reached the English National Elite 91kg semifinal in 2017; beat Chris Billam-Smith in the 2017 English National Championships Quarter-Final; reached the Semifinal of the 2015 England Youth National Championships; fought at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games; won the 2014 Great British Youth Championships won the 2013 Great Britain Junior Championships Final and captured a silver medal at the 2013 EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships.

As a pro, Riley won the vacant British Cruiserweight Title in September, 2023 by beating Nathan Quarless via a 10-round unanimous decision and defended it against Mikael Lawal by unanimous decision six months later. He’ll be taking a bit of a step up in class against Clarke as he’s just faced domestic-level opposition up until now. Riley measures 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 76.5-inch wingspan, so is 1.5-inches taller than Clarke. As far as power is concerned, he’s just above average as 58.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, including five of his past seven.

Prediction…

Clarke is a tough customer with a good chin and power while Riley is seven years younger and arguably has the better overall boxing skills. Clarke is more methodical and a great finisher if he has his opponent in trouble but has struggled somewhat in his past two outings. Riley is stepping up in class here and will need a solid chin. This could go either way as the odds show but I just have a feeling that Clarke’s going to pull this out one way or another.

Clarke has the edge in power.
