There’s a women’s junior middleweight unification bout this Saturday, August 29th as WBA/WBC Champion Mikaela Mayer takes on WBO Boss Chantelle Cameron. The 10-rounder from Birmingham, England can be seen live on ESPN+ in America while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports. Mayer last fought in October when she beat WBA Champion Mary Spencer by unanimous decision for her title and the vacant WBC and WBO Belts. In Mayer’s previous outing she beat Sandy Ryan by unanimous decision to defend her WBO Welterweight Title. It was an instant rematch as the pair originally met in 2024 with Mayer taking the belt via a 10-round majority decision. Before that, Mayer dropped a 10-round split decision to Natasha Jones in a shot at the IBF Welterweight Title. Cameron last fought in April when she beat Michaela Kotaskova by unanimous decision for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight bout. This may all sound confusing and that’s because Mayer gave up the WBO Junior Middleweight Belt for some reason shortly after beating Spencer.

The 36-year-old Mayer of Woodland Hills, California climbs through the ropes with an impressive record of 22-2 with 5 Ko’s and has boxed 184 rounds since turning pro in 2017. She enjoyed a fine amateur career and reportedly went 62-25 while winning the 2012, 2015 and 2016 USA Women’s National Championships Final and finished second in 2014. She also won the 2011, 2013 and 2014 USA Women’s National Golden Gloves Final and took bronze at the 2012 World Championships.
Mayer won the vacant WBC-NABF Female Junior Lightweight Title with an eight-round unanimous decision over Vanessa Bradford in 2018 and won the vacant WBO Junior Lightweight Belt in 2020 with a 10-round unanimous nod over Ewa Brodnicka. She then captured the IBF and Ring Magazine Junior Lightweight Championships in 2021 by beating Maiva Hamadouche by 10-round unanimous decision. Mayer stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach and fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada.
She doesn’t carry much in the way of power as just 22.7 per cent of her wins have been by stoppage and she has gone the distance in her last 12 fights. Mayer won the vacant NABF Super Featherweight Title in 2018 when she beat Vanessa Bradford by an eight-round unanimous decision and defended it three times. She captured the vacant WBO World Super Featherweight Title in 2020 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Ewa Brodnicka when Brodnicka lost her belt by coming in overweight and the title was on the line for Mayer only.
Mayer added the IBF version of the title in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Maiva Hamadouche and defended them with a unanimous decision over Jennifer Han before losing the belts to Alycia Baumgardner, the IBO and WBC Champion, in October, 2022. She rebounded from her lone loss with a 10-round unanimous decision over Lucy Wildheart to win the WBC Interim Lightweight Belt in April, 2023. Mayer, a three-weight world champion, has faced just two boxers with losing records as a pro and they were her first two bouts in 2017.
Cameron is 35 years old and hails from Northampton, England. She has boxed 175 rounds since making her pro debut in 2017. She started kickboxing as a 10-year-old then switched to Muay Thai six years later and began boxing at the age of 18. As an amateur, she captured a silver medal as a light-welterweight at the 2010 EU Championships and a bronze as a lightweight at the 2011 EU Championships, where she lost to Katie Taylor in the semi-finals. She carries a record of 22-1 with 8 Ko’s. As far as power goes, 36.4 per cent of her victories have come by stoppage and she has gone the distance in her last nine bouts.
Cameron won the vacant IBO Inter-Continental Super Featherweight Title in 2017 when she stopped Edith Ramos in the third round and took the vacant IBO Lightweight Crown in her next fight by halting Viviane Obenauf in the sixth round. The vacant WBC Silver Lightweight Title was added when she beat Jessica Gonzalez by unanimous decision in 2018. Cameron won the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Belt in 2020 when she beat an overweight Adriana dos Santos Araujo by unanimous decision.
She then took the IBF Super Lightweight Title from Mary McGee by unanimous decision in 2021 and the vacant WBA, WBO and IBO versions by beating Jessica McCaskill by unanimous decision in 2022. In 2023 she beat Katie Taylor by majority decision to defend her belts. However Taylor won the rematch by majority decision six months later. Cameron bounced back by beating Elhem Mekhaled by majority decision for the interim WBC Super Lightweight Belt and defended it twice before moving up in weight and beating Michaela Kotaskova in her last outing. Cameron measures 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 69-inch reach. She gives up an inch in height to Mayer but has a 2.5-inch edge in reach.
Prediction…
Both boxers have slick boxing skills with Cameron possessing a bit more power. However neither woman has recorded a stoppage in quite some time. This is quite an even matchup and the fight could easily go either way. Whoever lets their hands go and is more aggressive will have the advantage but Cameron is also fighting in her homeland. No outcome will be a surprise here including a draw but I’ll go with Mayer, based more or less on just a hunch.
A true tossup fight.
