There’s a pretty good 10-round middleweight bout on tap from New York City this Sunday, July 26th as unbeaten veteran Sergiy Derevyanchenko of Ukraine takes on Jalil Hackett of Washington, DC. The 10-round contest can be seen live in America on Paramount + while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports. Derevyanchenko last saw action 12 months ago when he stopped Jeremy Ramos in the sixth round. In his previous fight 11 months earlier he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Christian Mbilli in a shot at the WBC Continental Americas Super Middleweight Belt. Hackett last saw action in February when he beat Roberto Cruz Jr via a 10-round majority decision.

The 23-year-old Hackett enters the ring with a record of 12-1 with 9 Ko’s and has boxed 51 rounds since making his pro debut in 2021 as a teenager. As a youngster he formed a close relationship with Gary Antonio Russell and his brothers and decided to give boxing a go when he was eight years old while still enjoying soccer, football and basketball. He then focused solely on boxing when he was in middle school. He reportedly went 140-19 as an amateur and won numerous national titles including a Silver Gloves Championship and was also a two-time Junior Olympics Champion.
Hackett stands 5-feet-11 inches tall with a 71-inch reach and has quite a bit of power loaded in his fists as 75 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he has gone the distance in three of his past five fights. In 2023 he captured the vacant WBC Youth Silver Welterweight Belt via a third-round TKO over Adrian Gutierrez. His lone pro defeat came at the hands of Jose Roman Vazquez by 10-round split decision in December, 2024. Hackett will be taking a big step up in class this weekend as just seven of his first 13 opponents entered the ring with a winning record.
Derevyanchenko is now 40 years old and fights out of Brooklyn, New York. He’ll climb through the ropes with a mark of 16-6 with 11 Kos. He’s relatively small for a middleweight/super middleweight at 5-feet-9-inches with a 67.5-inch and gives up two inches in height and 3.5-inches in reach to Hackett. Derevyanchenko has boxed 163 rounds since turning pro in 2014, is a tough nut to crack and has good power as 68.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However, he’s gone the distance in nine of his last 10 fights and is just 4-6 in those contests.
Derevyanchenko enjoyed a fine amateur career and boxed at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China as well as in the World Series of Boxing. He reportedly 390-20 as an amateur and won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships. His first pro defeat came via a split decision to his stablemate Daniel Jacobs in a tilt for the vacant IBF Middleweight Title in 2018. He was then dropped in the first round by Gennadiy Golovkin a year later but fought back valiantly to lose a close unanimous decision in a slugfest for the vacant IBF and IBO Middleweight Belts.
He was beaten by Jermall Charlo via unanimous decision in 2020 in a shot at the WBC Middleweight Title and was then edged by Carlos Adames via a 10-round majority decision 15 months later. Derevyanchenko then rebounded with a 10-round unanimous decision over Joshua Conley before losing to Jaime Munguia by 12-round unanimous decision in 2023 in a shot at the vacant WBC Silver Super Middleweight Title. His last defeat was the contest with Mbilli which he dropped by a wide decision.
Therefore three of Derevyanchenko’s six losses defeats came in world title shots. So far he has fallen just short when stepping up in class but he has beaten the likes of Jack Culcay, Dashon Johnson, Raul Munoz, Tureano Johnson, Jessie Nicklow, Sam Soliman, Kemahl Russell and Elvin Ayala. He’s been dropped before but still has a solid chin and a ton of heart to go with it. There’s never really a dull moment in a Sergiy Derevyanchenko fight as he leaves nothing in the ring. However, his tank is naturally running lower now at the age of 40.
Prediction…
Hackett and Derevyanchenko both have solid power and chins but Hackett is 17 years younger and definitely has more of an upside at this stage of their careers. Derevyanchenko always has a puncher’s chance and since he’s aggressive he could possibly outwork the youngster. I could go either way in this fight because Derevyanchenko has never been stopped and should go the distance. And as mentioned before, he could outhustle Hackett. This is Derevyanchenko’s first fight in a year though and he may have some ring rust, which definitely won’t help him in a 10-round fight. This is a close call but I’ll give Hackett a slight edge due to his age.
Hackett is 17 years younger but cant allow Derevyanchenko to outwork him.
