Oscar Collazo vs Joey Canoy Preview June 20th, 2026

Unbeaten Oscar Collazo of Newark, New Jersey puts his 105 lb WBO/WBA and Ring Minimumweight (Strawweight) World Titles on the line against fellow southpaw Joey Canoy of the Philippines this Saturday, June 20th. The 12-rounder from Oceanside, California can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Collazo halted Melvin Jerusalem after seven rounds in 2023 to win the WBO Title and has defended it against Garen Diagan, Reyneris Gutierrez, Gerardo Zapata, Thammanoon Niyomtrong, Edwin Cano, Jayson Vayson and Jesus Haro. All of his defences have been by stoppage except the tilt with Zapata. His last contest was a sixth-round stoppage over Haro in March and he captured the WBA belt when he stopped Thammanoon Niyomtrong (Knockout CP Freshmart) in November, 2024. Canoy last stepped in the ring in March when he beat Pablito Balidio via a six-round unanimous decision. In his previous bout 11 months earlier Canoy stopped Minh Phat Sam in the 10th round for the WBC International Minimumweight Crown.

My Pick
The 29-year-old Collazo is a southpaw who resides in Puerto Rico and has 84 rounds of experience to his name since making his pro debut in 2020 following a fine seven-year amateur career which saw him win five national amateur titles as well as a bronze medal the 2017 PanAmerican Championships and a gold disc at the 2019 Pan American Games. He’s gone a perfect 14-0 as a pro with 11 Ko’s and stands 5-feet-2-inches tall with a 61-inch reach.
Collazo won the vacant WBO Latino Minimumweight title in his fourth pro outing when he halted Pedro Villegas in the third round and captured the world title in his seventh fight with the stoppage of Jerusalem. Collazo has heavy hands for such a small boxer as his current knockout ratio stands at 78.6 per cent. The only three men to go the distance with him have been Francisco Zambrano over six rounds in 2021; Vic Saludar over 12 rounds in July, 2022 and Gerardo Zapata in 12 in June, 2024. Both Saludar and Collazo hit the deck in the seventh round in their contest.
Canoy is 32 years old with a mark of 25-5-2 with 15 Ko’s and has boxed 205 rounds since making his pro debut in 2012 as a teenager following a good amateur career. He also fought at the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in 2025. He measures 5-feet-3-inches tall with an unlisted reach so is an inch taller than the champion. As far as power is concerned, Canoy is slightly above average as 60 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including six of his past eight.
Canoy lost to Jerry Tomogdan by 10-round majority decision in 2015 for the vacant Flipino Minimumweight Title; by fifth-round TKO to Jesse Espinas in 2016; by seventh-round stoppage to Hekkie Budler in 2017 for the vacant IBO Light Flyweight Belt; by 12-round unanimous decision to Nkosinathi Joyi for the vacant IBO Minimumweight Title in 2019 and via a 10-round unanimous nod to Nhlanhla Tyirha in 2021.
The two draws on Canoy’s record were against Felipe Cagubcob Jr over six rounds in 2014 and ArAr Andales over 12 rounds in 2022 for the WBO Oriental Minimumweight Belt. He also fought to a no-contest with Simpiwe Konkco in 2028 for the IBO Title Fight when the contest was halted due to a cut on Konkco which was caused by an accidental headbutt in the fourth round. Canoy won the vacant Oriental and Pacific Federation Light Flyweight Crown in 2022 when he stopped Kenichi Horikawa in the seventh round in Japan. He also has a win over former world champion Melvin Jerusalem in 2017 by a 10-round unanimous decision.
Prediction…
Canoy hasn’t lost since 2021 with nine wins and a draw over that span. This will be his first fight in America after fighting mainly in his homeland with a trip to Japan and a few to Africa thrown in there. He’s a veteran with decent power and has been stopped twice. The hard-hitting Collazo also possesses fine boxing skills and more experience against tougher opposition. I’m expecting Collazo to hang onto his title here and it could come by stoppage.
Collazo’s experience against tougher opposition and power are the keys.
