My Pick
The 29-year-old Cain enters the ring with an impressive mark of 14-1 with 12 Ko’s and has fought just 58 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015. as an amateur he boxed in the 2013 Great Britain Youth Championships. He possesses quite a bit of power in his arsenal as 85.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including six of his past seven. Cain measures 5-feet-4-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. Cain captured the vacant WBC International Silver Super Bantamweight Title in 2022 when he stopped Pablo Ariel Gomez in just 19 seconds.
He then defended the belt by halting Luis Moreno in 122 seconds. However he lost that crown in his next bout when Ionut Baluta edged him by a 10-round split decision in March, 2023 with Baluta being dropped twice in the opening round and Cain being floored in the ninth round. In July, 2024 Cain added the British and Commonwealth Bantamweight Titles by stopping Ashley Lane in the fifth round. In his next outing three months later he won the vacant WBC International Bantamweight Belt by stopping Lazaro Casseres in the second round. Just eight of his 15 opponents entered the ring with a winning record and he lost when stepping up in class against Baluta but fared well against Charlie Edwards.
Alejandro Gonzalez is 26 years old and makes the ring walk with a record of 19-6-3 with 11 Ko’s. He made his pro debut in 2018 and has 163 rounds of experience under his belt. He stands 5-feet-6-inches tall and also has an unlisted each so has a two inch edge in height over Cain. As far as power is concerned, he’s just above average as 58 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in five of his past nine outings. Gonzalez won the vacant IBF Youth Super Bantamweight Title in 2021 with a 10-round majority decision over Billy Stuart.
He added the WBC Latino Bantamweight Belt in 2024 by stopping Brandon Gamez Rocha in the eighth round. Later that year he won the vacant WBC Silver Bantamweight Crown via a 10-round unanimous nod over Arturo Najera. As for his losses, Gonzalez was stopped once when Sebastian Chavez halted him in the fourth round back in 2019. He also dropped decisions to Bryan Vazquez, Frency Saya, Liborio Solis, Christopher Rodriguez and Jose Teran. The three draws on his record were with Jorge Zarate (twice) and Odin Baez. Just five of his 28 opponents antered the ring with a losing record.
Prediction…
Cain has impressive power and boxing skills to go with a decent chin and he’s fighting in his hometown. Gonzalez hails from Mexico City and has a 1-2 record when fighting outside of his homeland. Regardless of what the odds and the boxer’s records may suggest, this has the potential to be a very close fight. An upset is possible but Gonzalez will need to dominate proceedings or knock Cain out to win in Liverpool. Therefore I’ll be going with Cain.
Cain has the hometown advantage.
