Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Carlos Cuadras +461
  • Tomoya Tsuboi -750

My Pick

Cuadras is now 37 years old and boasts a mark of 44-5-1 with 28 Ko’s to his name. He stands 5-feet-4-inches tall and has a reach of 66 inches. He turned pro back in 2008 and has 307 rounds under his belt since then. Cuadras is a fine power puncher as 63.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but he’s halted just one of his past 14 opponents and his record is 9-5 over that stretch. However he’s currently riding a five-fight winning streak which includes a 2023 split decision over Pedro Guevara for the vacant WBC Interim Super Flyweight Title.

The losses suffered by Cuadras came at the hands of Jesse Rodriguez by unanimous decision in 2022 in a shot at the vacant WBC Super Flyweight Belt. He also lost to Juan Francisco Estrada by an 11th-round TKO in 2020 and a unanimous decision in 2017. Roman Gonzalez beat him via unanimous decision in September, 2016 while Cuadras was the WBC Super Flyweight Champion. He was also beaten by McWilliams Arroyo by 10-round majority decision five months after losing to Estrada in 2017.

Cuadras won the world title in May, 2014 by technical decision over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and defended it six times before losing to Gonzalez. Cuadras’ lone draw was a four-round technical affair with Jose Salgado in September 2014. Cuadras has taken on some tough opponents over the years with his best wins coming against Rungvisai, David Carmona, Richie Mepranum, Dixon Flores, Jose Salgado, Ricardo Nunez, Luis Concepcion and Koki Eto. He’s been stopped once and on the canvas in the past but still has a strong chin. Cuadras possesses good speed, experience, power and boxing skills and is a handful for anybody when he’s at his best.

Since turning pro, Cuadras has also won the WBC Continental Americas Super Flyweight, and Bantamweight Titles, the WBC Silver Super Flyweight Belt and the interim WBC Latino Bantamweight Crown. Before turning pro he enjoyed a fine amateur career by winning a gold medal at the PanAmerican Games in 2007. He also boxed at the 2007 World Amateur Championships where he was beaten by Joe Murray and made it to the 2004 Junior Olympic International Tournament semifinals.

Tsuboi is 29 years old and makes the ring walk with a mark of just 2-0 with 1 KO after turning pro in March of this year. He stopped Boonrueang Phayom in the second round of his pro debut and then beat Van Thao Tran by 10-round unanimous decision for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight Belt. Tsuboi also had a fine amateur career as he struck gold at the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships and captured bronze medals at Asian Games and Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in 2022.

At 5-feet-3-inches tall with a 64-inch reach, Tsuboi gives up an inch in height and two inches in reach to Cuadras. It’s hard to tell how much power he has after just two pro contests but his current knockout ratio clocks in at 50 per cent. He’s basically jumped in feet first into the deep end as a pro and will be taking a pretty big jump in class against Cuadras on Monday.

Prediction…

Cuadras fought three times in 2023 but just once last year and this is his second outing this year. He’s in the twilight of his career at the age of 37 but has a wealth of amateur and pro experience. Tsuboi will be entering the ring for just the third time as a pro and will be boxing at home. The odds should probably be a little closer here as Cuadras has had a fine career. Tsuboi will climb the rankings if he wins this fight and even if he loses he should gain some valuable experience. Cuadras has been involved in several classic battles over the years and they may have taken a lot out of him by now. I’m not really sure what to expect here but if Tsuboi is as good as he appears to be and considering he’s eight years younger than Cuadras, he should be able to do just enough to earn a victory.

Cuadras has plenty of experience but is now 37 years old.
