My Pick
The 26-year-old Torrez makes the ring walk with a perfect record of 13-0 with 11 Ko’s. There’s no denying his power as 84.6 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage. Joey Dawejko and Vianello have been the only men to lose by anything other than a stoppage to Torrez. Dawejko was disqualified in the fifth round in September, 2024 for repeatedly spitting out his mouthpiece and Vianello went the distance with him earlier this year. Torrez made his pro debut in 2022 and has fought just 43 rounds since, due to his power.
As an amateur, Torrez enjoyed an extensive career by winning a silver medal in the super heavyweight division at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He also won bronze at the 2019 Pan American Games; gold at the 2017 Golden Gloves tournament; gold at the 2017 and 2018 U.S. National Championships; gold at the 2014, 2015 and 2016 U.S. Youth National Championships and bronze at the 2016 Youth World Championships. Therefore it’s safe to say that he possesses some fine skills to accompany his power.
Torrez, a southpaw, comes from a boxing family as his father and grandfather were both boxers and his father is also his coach. Torrez stands 6-feet-2-inches tall with a 76-inch reach so he’s definitely not one of the bigger heavyweights around. He captured the vacant NABF Junior Heavyweight Title in May of last year when he stopped Brandon Moore in the fifth round and has defended it twice. He’d never taken on a contender until facing Vianello and is actually taking a step backward against Salek this weekend.
Salek is 27 years old and makes the ring walk with a mark of 23-7 with 14 Ko’s and has banked 139 rounds of pro experience since making his debut in 2017 following his amateur career. He measures just over 6-feet-3-inches tall with an unlisted reach which gives him a 1.5-inch height advantage over Torrez. When it comes to power, Salek is above average as 60.9 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s halted just one of his last 13 opponents and he’s gone just 8-5 over that stretch.
The losses Salek has suffered have come at the hands of Pavel Sour, Peter Kadiru, Kash Ali, Nathan Gorman, Umut Camkiran, Dusan Veletic and Ivan Balaz with Balaz, Gorman, Ali and Kadiru all stopping him. Salek’s loss to Sour was for the Czech Heavyweight Title in 2019. Kadiru halted him for the vacant WBC Youth Crown and Kash Ali stopped him for the vacant IBF European Belt. The loss to Gorman was for the vacant IBF International Heavyweight Title and the defeat to Camkiran was for the WBC CISBB Belt. In addition the defeat to Veletic was for the German Crown and Balaz halted him for the Czech Belt.
Salek has had some success though as he won the vacant Czech Title in 2021 and defended it once. He hasn’t had much luck when stepping up in class however, which he hasn’t done often. His most recognizable opponents have been Ali, Sour, Gorman and Laszlo Toth. He did manage to beat Sour in one of their two bouts and also beat Toth. But overall, just 16 of Salek’s 30 opponents entered the ring with a winning record.
Prediction…
Torrez has very heavy hands and pretty good skills while Salek has been stopped in four of his seven losses so the writing appears to be on the wall here. The odds are astronomical and I suppose any heavyweight has a puncher’s chance but this bout looks like a complete mismatch on paper and that will likely come true in the ring once the bell rings too. I’m going with Torrez by a stoppage and likely a pretty early one at that. The best bet is the round of stoppage or a small wager on Salek in case he hits the jackpot.
A bit of a mismatch here.
