My Pick

The 31-year-old Leo, who fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada, climbs into the ring with an impressive mark of 25-1 with 12 Ko’s. He’s not really a big hitter regardless of his knockout over Lopez, but still has respectable power as 48 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage. He’s stopped three of his last four opponents but has gone the distance in eight of his last 12 contests. Leo made his pro debut in 2012 after a pretty good amateur career and has boxed 165 rounds since. As a youngster he fought in several national Golden Gloves tournaments. He measures 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 68.5-inch reach so gives up 1.5-inches in height to Kameda but has a 1.5-inch reach advantage.

Leo started his pro career rather slowly with just two of his first 10 opponents having winning records. Since then, he’s beaten the likes of Eduardo Baez, Mike Plania, Nicolas Polanco, Basilio Nieves, Jonathan Aguilar, Glenn Poras, Erik Ruiz and Mark John Yap. He also stopped Cesar Juarez in the 11th round in December, 2019 to capture the vacant WBO NABO Super Bantamweight Crown. Leo was then matched with Tramaine Williams for the vacant WBO Super Bantamweight Title and took it by a unanimous decision.

Leo was scheduled to meet Stephen Fulton WBO Super Bantamweight Belt, but Fulton pulled out of the August, 2020 fight due to a positive Covid 19 test and was replaced by Williams. Leo then met Fulton in his first defence in January, 2021 and dropped a wide unanimous decision. He’s fought five times since then with a 10-round majority decision over Aaron Alameda, a ninth-round stoppage of Polanco, a first-round stoppage of Plania, a 10-round unanimous win over Eduardo Baez and the win over Lopez for the world title. His fight against Polanco in November, 2023 was his first in two-and-a-half years and this will now be his fifth bout in the past 18 months.

The 33-year-old Kameda hails from of Osaka and will climb through the ring ropes with a mark of 42-4 with 23 Ko’s and has boxed 337 rounds since making his pro debut in 2008. Kameda can box and also has decent power on his punches as 54.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including three of his last four victories. However he went the distance in his seven previous fights. Kameda seems to have returned to his aggressive style of a few years ago though which saw him typically go after his opponent when he had him hurt.

His first two losses came against Jamie McDonnell when McDonnell was the WBA Bantamweight king. Kameda had him down in the third round of their first meeting in 2015, but dropped a close unanimous decision by scores of 114-113 across the board. McDonnell then beat him in their rematch by unanimous decision four months later. His third defeat came at the hands of Rey Vargas in 2019 in a shot at the WBC Super Bantamweight Title. Kameda stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall and has a 67-inch reach.

Kameda won the WBO Bantamweight title in 2013 with a unanimous decision over Paulus Ambunda. He then defended it against Immanuel Naidjala by unanimous decision, against Panya Uthok by seventh-round KO and Alejandro Hernandez by split decision before vacating the championship. Since turning pro he’s also won the WBC Silver, NABF, WBC Youth World, WBC CABOFE, and WBC FECARBOX Bantamweight Titles and also has wins over Ivan Morales, Daniel Noriega, Yonfrez Parejo and William Encarnacion. Tomoki is the younger brother of fellow boxers Koki and Daiki Kameda.

Prediction……

Leo has displayed pretty good power recently and both he and Kameda have good chins as they’ve never been stopped. It’s debatable who owns the better boxing skills and this should be a close, hard-fought battle as both boxers usually let their hands go without hesitation. Kameda is fighting at home in Japan but he hasn’t really looked all that great recently while Leo has perhaps exceeded expectations. If Leo can replicate his performance against Lopez then he should win this fight but a Kameda victory wouldn’t be a surprise. Based on recent performances though i’ll give Leo a slight edge here.

Leo’s recent power surge and overall aggressiveness should to the trick.
