Money Line (To Win)
The money line is simply a bet on which team will win the game. The oddsmaker sets the odds to reflect each teams perceived chance of winning the game. The odds determine the risk vs reward of a bet on either team.
Here is an example using the Miami Marlins season opener vs the Pittsburgh Pirates:
In this example the Marlins are -130 favorites. This means you would have to risk $130 to win $100 betting on the Marlins to win the game. The Pirates are +120 underdogs, which means a $100 bet on the Pirates would win $120 if they pulled off the upset.
Run Line (Spread)
The run line is always a 1.5 run spread for MLB games. The favorite must win by 2 or more runs to cover the run line, while the underdog must either win the game outright or lose by 1 run.
In this example a run line bet on the Marlins has odds of +163, so a $100 run line bet on Miami would win $163 if they won the game by 2 or more runs. The Pirates have run line odds of (+1.5) -183, which means you would have to risk $183 to win $100 betting on the Pirates to either win the game or lose by 1.
Total Runs (Over/Under)
The total involves betting on the number of runs to be scored in the game by both teams combined. The oddsmaker will set a “total” and you can bet on whether the total runs will be over or under this number.
In this example the total is set at 7.5 runs. Over bets would win if 8 or more runs are scored and under bets would win if 7 or fewer runs are scored.
