My Pick
Okolie of London is 32 years old and big and lanky at 6-feet-5-inches tall with an 82.5-inch reach. This gives him a one-inch height advantage over Tetteh as well as 4.5-inches in reach. Okolie carries around a fine record of 22-1 with 16 Ko’s and has boxed 120 rounds since making his pro debut in 2017. So far he has displayed impressive power as 72.7 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage but has gone the distance in four of his past six fights.
He won the vacant WBA Continental Cruiserweight Title in 2018 via a 10-round unanimous decision over Isaac Chamberlain. Okolie then added the Commonwealth Crown a few months later by stopping Luke Watkins in the third round. He’s also beaten Matty Askin and Wadi Camacho to add the British Title and hoisted the European Cruiserweight Belt in October, 2019 with a seventh-round TKO of Yves Ngabu. He stepped up in class earlier in 2020 when he met Glowacki and passed the test with flying colours.
Okolie suffered his lone pro defeat three fights ago, in May, 2023 when Chris Billam-Smith beat him by majority decision to take his Cruiserweight Title. He had won the vacant belt in 2021 by stopping Glowacki in the sixth round and then stopped Dilan Prasovic in the third round in his first defence followed by unanimous decisions over Michal Cieslak and David Light before losing to Billam-Smith. Okolie then faced Lukasz Rozanski in for the WBC Bridgerweight Belt and stopped him just 175 seconds.
This will be Okolie’s third outing at heavyweight as his debut came last December when he stopped Hussein Muhamed. Before turning pro, Okolie enjoyed a fine amateur career and won the 2016 AIBA European Olympic Qualification Event. He boxed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where he beat Igor Jakubowski of Poland and lost to Erislandy Savon of Cuba. Okolie also boxed in the World Series of Boxing in 2016 for Britain and was beaten by Erislandy Savon again.
Tetteh is now 37 years old and is known for his power due to his record of 23-3 with 20 Ko’s. He packs a lot of hurt in his punches as 86.7 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage, including his last 10. His first defeat was by stoppage as Daniel Dubois blasted him out in just 130 seconds back in 2019 in a shot at the vacant Commonwealth and WBO International Heavyweight Belts. He was also stopped by Dillian Whyte and Frazer Clarke in his last two outings so Tetteh has gone the distance just three times as a pro.
This is just his his seventh fight since losing to Dubois six years ago. He made his pro debut back in 2012 and has fought just 108 rounds due to his power and susceptible chin. While he may possess a fine record, Tetteh’s only recognizable opponents have been Dubois, Whyte and Clarke and he was halted by all three of them. He’s listed as 6-feet-4-inches tall with a 78-inch reach. Tetteh did manage to win the vacant WBA Pan African Light Heavyweight Title in 2014 with a first-round TKO over Maxwell Amponsah.
He then captured the vacant WBO African Heavyweight Crown in 2017 with a second-round KO over Boniface Kabore. It looks like Tetteh started out as a light heavyweight, then moved up to cruiserweight for a few fights and settled in the heavyweight division. He weighed close to 234 lbs for a fight in November, 2022 then dropped down to 198 for a bout a year later and back up to 247 for his contest against Whyte in December and 241 lbs against Clarke in April.
Prediction…
Okolie has a habit of clinching and was deducted a point in both the fifth and seventh rounds when losing his cruiserweight title to Billam-Smith. Also, he was dropped in the fourth, 10th and 11th rounds in that fight so the 37-year-old Tetteh does have a puncher’s chance here. However that’s probably about it as his ability to take a punch appears to be his weakness and Okolie possesses good power. I’m expecting Okolie to win this contest by stoppage and it could be an early one at that.
Okolie possesses better power and skills.
