My Pick

The 29-year-old Ortiz enters the contest with a fine mark of 19-2-1 with 9 Ko’s and has boxed 135 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. He enjoyed a pretty good amateur career but was beaten by the likes of Jaron Ennis, Teofimo Lopez and Gary Antuanne Russell before turning pro. He stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 69-inch reach. As far as power goes, Ortiz is average as 47.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s stopped just one of his last eight opponents.

He lost a close 12-round unanimous decision to Vasyl Lomachenko in October, 2022 and in 2024 he dropped a controversial unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez in a shot at the WBO Junior Welterweight Title. The lone draw on his record was an eight-round majority affair with Joseph Adorno four in April, 2021. Ortiz beat former world champion Jamel Herring via 10-round unanimous decision to retain the NABF Lightweight Crown and win the vacant IBF USBA Belt in May, 2022.

He then took another step up in class against Lomachenko and Lopez and handled himself quite well. Before meeting Herring, Ortiz had beaten the likes of Derrick Murray, Vitor Jones and Romain Couture. Since turning pro Ortiz has also captured the vacant WBC Youth World Lightweight Title, the vacant WBC Youth Inter-Continental Super Lightweight Belt and the vacant WBC (USNBC) Silver Lightweight Title. Ortiz also took the vacant NABF Lightweight Championship with his win over Nahir Albright in February, 2022.

The 36-year-old Claggett makes the ring walk with a 39-8-2 record with 27 Ko’s and has boxed 292 rounds since making his pro debut in 2008 after his amateur career. He also measures 5-feet-8-inches tall and has a 70-inch reach, which gives him a one-inch edge in reach on Ortiz. As far as power is concerned, Claggett has enough of it to do some damage as 69.2 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage including eight of his past 10.

Claggett has eight defeats on his record. He was stopped in the eighth round by Romeo Jakosalem in 2011; dropped an eight-round split decision to Alexandre Lepelley in 2013; lost an eight-round unanimous decision to Konstantin Ponomarev in 2015; lost a 10-round majority decision to Chris van Heerden in 2016; dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Danny O’Connor in 2018 in a shot at the WBC International Silver Super Lightweight Title; lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Yves Ulysse Jr in 2019 and dropped a 10-round split decision to Mathieu Germain in 2021. His most notable loss was a unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez in June, 2024 in a shot at his WBO Junior Welterweight Belt.

The two draws on his record were a four-rounder with Dave Petryk back in 2009 and a 10-round affair with Mathieu Germain in 2021 for the IBF North American and International Super Lightweight Belts. As a pro, Claggett has captured the vacant WBC Youth Inter-Continental Super Lightweight Title, the vacant Canadian Welterweight Belt, the vacant NABA USA Super Lightweight Belt and the IBF North American, WBO International, NABF and IBF International Super Lightweight Titles. His biggest wins have been over Miguel Madueno, Carlos Sanchez, Alberto Machado, Tony Luis and Emanuel Lopez.

Prediction…

Ortiz looked very impressive against Lomachenko Lopez but fell just short. Claggett went the distance with Lopez but never threatened the champion. However he does have power and Ortiz will need to take note of that. Ortiz has a pretty solid chin though and possesses better boxing skills than Claggett so I’m expecting him to earn a hard-fought victory this weekend.

Ortiz has the edge in skill.
