My Pick
The 28-year-old Paul enters the ring with a mark of 11-1 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed 60 rounds since making his pro boxing debut in 2020. He stands 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 76-inch reach and has decent power in his fists as 63.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including three of the past four after going the distance in the previous three. He also possesses decent boxing skills for somebody who made his name on You Tube and appears to be taking take the sport somewhat seriously. As for his list of opponents so far, most of them have at least had some type of fighting background. He’s taken on Ali Eson Gib; former NBA player Nate Robinson; Ben Askren; Tyrone Woodley (twice); Anderson Silva; Tommy Fury; Nate Diaz; Andre August; Ryan Bourland, Mike Perry and Mike Tyson.
He stopped Gib in the first round, Robinson in the second round, Askren in the first round and Woodley in the sixth round of their rematch after fighting to an eight-round split decision win in their first meeting. He then beat Silva by eight-round unanimous decision after dropping him in the final round and was beaten by a mediocre boxer in Tommy Fury by 10-round split decision. Paul then bounced back with his wins over Diaz, August, Bourland, Perry and Tyson. He beat Diaz by a 10-round unanimous decision then stopped August and Bourland in the first round and Perry in the sixth.
Cesar Chavez Jr is now 39 years old and has fought just three times since 2021. He beat Hall in his last outing and that was his first fight since December, 2021 when he topped David Zegarra by 10-round unanimous decision. Six months before that he dropped an eight-round split decision to Anderson Silva. In November, 2020 Chavez stopped Jeyson Minda in four rounds and two months prior he dropped a six-round technical decision to Mario Abel Cazares after an accidental headbutt caused the fight to be stopped.
In August, 2019 Chavez returned after a 26-month layoff and blasted Evert Bravo out in less than 90 seconds in a light heavyweight tilt. His previous bout was a unanimous decision defeat to Canelo Alvarez in 2017 in a fight he was dominated in and he quit in the corner against Daniel Jacobs in December, 2019 after coming back against Bravo. After all is said and done, Chavez makes the ring walk with a record of 54-6-1 with 34 Ko’s but is known to gain weight and focus more on his out-of-ring activities and lifestyle than he does on training.
Chavez was banned nine months and fined $900,000 in 2013 for testing positive for an illegal substance. His other losses were a unanimous decision to Sergio Martinez in September, 2012 to lose his WBC Middleweight Title, which he had won via a majority decision over Sebastian Zbik in June, 2011 and a ninth-round stoppage at the hands of Andrzej Fonfara in April, 2015. However, Chavez had Martinez down and in deep trouble in the last round in their title fight before the bell arguably saved Martinez. Against Fonfara though, Chavez suffered a bit of a beating. Size-wise, Chavez stands 6-feet-1 tall with a 73-inch reach so gives up three inches in reach against Paul.
He possesses decent power in his fists as 63 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage with his last one coming in November, 2020. Chavez used to be a powerful boxer with a pretty solid chin and was hard to keep at bay when letting his hands go. Most of his knockouts came due to an accumulation of blows rather than just once punch. Chavez likes to apply pressure to the body and head and keep moving forward until he eventually breaks his opponent down. He’s boxed 344 rounds since his pro debut in 2003 so has plenty of experience with his biggest wins being over Brian Vera (twice), Marco Reyes, Andy Lee, Marco Antonio Rubio, Peter Manfredo Jr. and John Duddy. He also fought to a six-round draw with Carlos Molina in 2005.
Prediction…
Chavez Jr. is 11 years older than Paul with a ton of experience and is a former world champion who successfully defended his title three times and also won a few minor belts. However he’s known for his lack of training discipline and stamina could be a problem for him. Paul has some potential as a boxer due to his age, footwork and willingness to learn but he needs to be wary of Chavez’s ring IQ and experience. It’s hard to predict these types of fights as Chavez may be more interested in the paycheque than winning. Chavez definitely has the skills to beat Paul, considering Tommy Fury already did, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to win. Anything can happen here but I’d probably put my money on Paul leaving the ring with a victory.
Chavez has the skills but does he have the stamina?
