Deontay Wilder vs Tyrrell Herndon Preview June 27th, 2025

Former WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder of Tuscaloosa, Alabama returns to the ring on Friday, June 27th when he takes on Tyrrell Herndon of San Antonio, Texas. This is Wilder’s first fight in just over a year as his last outing against Zhilei Zhang of China resulted in a fifth-round TKO loss last June 1st. Herndon hasn’t fought since May of last year when he edged Rudy Silvas by a six-round split decision for the vacant Texas Heavyweight Crown. Friday’s 10-round fight from Wichita, Kansas, can be seen on PPV.com, BLK Prime and Integrated Sports PPV. Wilder has lost his last two fights as he dropped a wide unanimous decision to Joseph Parker in December, 2023 in a shot at the vacant WBC International Heavyweight Belt and the WBO Inter-Continental Title.

My Pick

The 39-year-old Wilder beat former champ Bermane Stiverne by unanimous decision in January, 2015 to claim the WBC title and lost it to Tyson Fury in his 11th defence in 2020 when he was stopped in the seventh round. Wilder and Fury had fought to a draw in 2018 and Fury then stopped him in the 11th round in their trilogy match in 2021. Before running into Stiverne, Wilder had stopped all 32 of his opponents including Malik Scott, Owen Beck and Audley Harrison. The Bronze Bomber will climb into the ring this weekend with a fine record of 43-4-1 with 42 Ko’s.

Wilder is a former Olympic bronze medalist who became the first American since Shannon Briggs in 2007 to own a portion of the heavyweight title when he beat Stiverne. Wilder is basically known for two things, which are his size and his power as he stands 6-feet-6-inches tall with an 83-inch reach and has stopped 42 of his opponents. The only men he was unable to stop were Fury in their three contests as well as Zhang and Parker. However he did manage to drop Fury four times in their trilogy as he decked him in the ninth and 12th rounds during their draw in their first meeting and him twice in the fourth round of their third fight.

Therefore, Wilder has dropped every single opponent he’s faced as a pro except Parker and Zhang. Wilder now has 179 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2008 and 97.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage while just six of his 42 KO victims made it past the fifth round. Of course, his last win by stoppage came in October, 2022 when he halted Robert Helenius in the first round. In fact, his record in his last eight bouts is three wins, a draw and four defeats and he’s been stopped three times in those outings, twice by Fury and once by Zhang.

Herndon is 37 years old and has a mark of 24-5 with 15 Ko’s. He’s boxed 100 rounds since turning pro in 2015following a pretty good amateur career. He measures 6-feet-3-inches tall with an unlisted reach so gives up three inches in height to Wilder. As a pro he’s also won the vacant American Boxing Federation American West and Inter-Continental Titles as well as the vacant Universal Boxing Organization Heavyweight Title. However he’s taking a big step up in class this weekend as he’s never faced a top-10 contender and just eight of his 29 opponents entered the ring with a winning record and he lost three of those fights.

In addition, Herndon has been stopped in four of his five defeats. He has faced a few known opponents though as Efe Ajagba stopped him in 89 seconds in Ajagba’s pro debut in 2017 and he was disqualified against Brandon Glanton in the third round of their 2018 bout. He was also halted by Richard Torrez Jr. in the second round in 2023. In addition, he was halted by Shamarian Snider in the third round in 2017 and by Corey Barlow in the first round in 2019. As far as power goes, Herndon packs a bit of a punch as 62.5 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage.

Prediction…

Wilder has the power to instantly turn a fight around with one punch but Herndon may also possess the power to do so as Wilder’s punch resistance isn’t what it used to be. And let’s not forger that Herndon has been stopped in four of his five losses. Wilder looked a shell of himself against Parker and Zhang and he could be a shot fighter at this point. Nothing will surprise me here including a draw but if Wilder is serious about continuing his career he needs to let his hands go and if he does he should be able to stop Herndon relatively early.

Wilder’s power should do the trick.
