My Pick

The 28-year-old Whittaker makes the ring walk with a near-perfect mark of 10-0-1 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed 55 rounds since making his pro debut in 2022 following a stellar amateur career which saw him reportedly go 53-13. He captured a silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. He also won a silver at the 2019 European Games as well as a bronze at the 2019 World Championships and a gold at the 2018 EU Championships.

As a pro, Whittaker won the vacant IBF International Light Heavyweight Title in June, 2024 with a unanimous 10-round decision over Eworitse Ezra Arenyeka. He fought for the vacant WBO Global Light Heavyweight Belt four months later against Liam Cameron but the fight ended in a six-round technical draw after both boxers fell out of the ring and Whittaker couldn’t continue. The pair met in a rematch six months later with Whittaker halting Cameron in the second round to retain his IBF Title.

Whittaker measures 6-feet-3-inches tall for a three-inch edge in height over Suarez and reportedly has a 75-inch reach. As far as power is concerned, he has enough of it to do some damage as 70 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last two. However he’s more known for his unorthodox style and showboating in the ring while feinting and slipping punches. Whittaker enters the fight while ranked number three in the world by the WBC and number five by the IBF.

As for the hard-hitting Suarez, the 34-year old owns a record of 21-4 with 20 Ko’s and he has banked just 83 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. As an amateur he competed in the World Series of Boxing. He stands six-feet-tall with a reported 72-inch reach so gives up three inches in each department to Whittaker. He has a plenty of power in his fists though as 95.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last 12. The only time he won a fight on points was back in December, 2018 when be beat Hugo David Quiroz over 10 rounds via a unanimous decision.

While Suarez is known as a knockout artist, he’s gone just 4-4 in his last eight fights. His first defeat came at the hands of Alberto Ramiez when he was caught cold in the first round and stopped in just 151 seconds in 2022. He was then halted by Lyndon Arthur via a body shot in the 10th round in 2023 in a shot at the vacant IBO Light Heavyweight Belt after dropping Arthur in the fourth round. However Suarez came in overweight for the fight and the title was on the line for Arthur only.

In his next bout in February, 2024, Suarez went from 176 lbs to 209 lbs and then came back down to 172 lbs seven months later when he was stopped in the second round by Sharabutdin Ataev. He rebounded from that defeat by halting Walter Sequeira in just 131 seconds to win the vacant Argentine Light Heavyweight Belt. Suarez then moved up in weight again by 10 lbs for his next two fights and dropped an eight-round majority decision to Vasily Voytsekhovsky and then stopping Sergio dantas in two rounds in his last outing.

Suarez also won the vacant WBA Fedebol Light Heavyweight Title in 2019 when he halted Gerard Mellado in the first round and added the Argentine for the first time in 2020 with a first-round stoppage of Walter Sequeira. Suarez moved up to cruiserweight in December, 2020 and won the vacant WBA Fedebol Crown when he beat Cesar Hernan Reynoso by ninth-round TKO. He came back down to the 175 lb light heavyweight division and added the vacant WBO Latino Title to his collection when he stopped Juan Boada in the third round.

Prediction…

Suarez certainly has plenty of power but considering that he’s been moving up and down in weight during his career he may have a hard time coming in at 175 lbs without draining himself. He has a puncher’s chance here if he catches the elusive Whittaker on the chin but that’s a lot easier said than done. Whittaker will try to avoid any type of firefight by using his superior boxing skills and footwork. Of course, he’s also fighting at home where visitors to the UK often get shafted when it comes to the scorecards and refereeing decisions. It will be interesting to see what happens if Whittaker gets nailed on the chin but in all likelihood he’ll box his way to a decision.

Whittaker will use his boxing skills to avoid Suarez’s power.
