My Pick
Trinidad is a 30-year-old who climbs into the ring with an almost perfect mark of 20-0-2 with 14 Ko’s. He’s a pretty big hitter as 70 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage. However he’s halted just one of his past four opponents. He made his pro debut in 2018 after an amateur career and is currently ranked sixth in the world by the WBC and WBA, 14th by the WBO and second by the IBF. He stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 68-inch reach.
Trinidad has good mobility with fine lateral movement and a stinging jab and prefers to fight from range than in close quarters. He’s a good combination puncher as well but isn’t really known for his speed. The two blemishes on his record are a four-round draw with Gerardo Yescas, which came in his pro debut and a 10-round draw with Lorenzo Parra last August to retain his WBC Continental Americas Featherweight Crown.
He won that belt back in 2024 when he halted Jose Perez in the eighth round and has defended it five times. Trinidad has also beaten the likes of Mike Plania, Alexander Espinoza, Jose Luis Ramirez, Roberto Meza, Hector Sosa and Viktor Slavinskyi. Trinidad is creeping up in age and is hoping to land a world title shot in the not too-distant future. He currently has 121 rounds of pro experience under his belt.
Ancajas is a 32-year-old southpaw who enters the ring at 38-4-2 with 25 Kos. He won the IBF Jr. Bantamweight Title via a unanimous decision over McJoe Arroyo in September, 2016 and defended it against Miguel Gonzalez, Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, Teiru Kinoshita, Jamie Conlan, Ryuichi Funai and Israel Gonzalez by stoppage as well as Jonas Sultan and Jonathan Rodriguez by unanimous decision and Alejandro Santiago Barrios via a split-decision draw.
He then lost the belt in his 10th defence when Fernando Martinez beat him by unanimous decision in February, 2022 and he also lost by unanimous decision in their rematch eight months later. Ancajas’ first pro loss was by 10-round majority decision to Mark Anthony Geraldo in 2012 and he was held to a four-round technical draw by Ervin Yamo in 2010. The only man to stop him has been Takuma Inoue, when he was halted in the ninth round in Tokyo in February, 2024.
The former champ is 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach which means he gives up four inches in height to Trinidad as well as 1.5-inches in reach. Ancajas has boxed 276 rounds since turning pro in 2009 as a 17-year-old and enjoyed a fine amateur career by reportedly going 90-5. Since turning pro, Ancajas has also won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth Super Flyweight Title, Philippines Luzon Professional Boxing Association Bantamweight Title and the IBF Pan Pacific Super Flyweight Title.
He’s a skilled all-round boxer who carries enough power in his fists as 65.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he has stopped judt three of his past nine opponents and his record is 6-3 over that span. Ancajas also has a pretty solid chin as he’s been stopped just once. He isn’t shy about letting his hands go either. Ancajas’ is used to fighting on the road since he’s 14-3-1 with 10 Ko’s while boxing outside of his homeland.
Prediction…
Trinidad and Ancajas are both good boxers with power and sturdy chins. Trinidad has the size advantage while Ancajas has the edge in experience. Despite the odds, I can see either boxer winning this fight but am leaning slightly towards Trinidad due to his physical advantages.
Trinidad has a slight edge in overall boxing skills.
