My Pick

Masternak is now 38 years old and he climbs through the ropes with a record of 50-6 with 33 Ko’s and has been stopped twice as a pro. The first time was an 11th-round TKO at the hands of Gregory Drozd in October, 2013 in a shot at the European Cruiserweight Belt and he was also halted by Chris Billam-Smith in the eighth round in 2023 in a shot at the WBO World Cruiserweight Title. Masternak has 381 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut back in 2006.

He’s also been beaten by Youri Kayembre Kalenga via 12-round split decision in 2014 for the Interim WBA Cruiserweight Title; by 12-round split decision to Johnny Muller in 2015; by 12-round unanimous decision in a slugfest to Tony Bellew in 2015 in a shot at the vacant European Cruiserweight Title and by a 12-round unanimous decision to Yunier Dorticos in 2018. As far as power is concerned, Masternak can do some damage as 66 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including five of his last six.

As an amateur, he became the Polish junior champion as a middleweight in 2005 and joined the national junior team. He then reached the quarterfinals of the European Junior Championships and reportedly went 61-9 as an amateur. Masternak stands 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 76-inch reach. Since turning pro, he’s also won the the WBO European, WBA Inter-Continental, IBF Inter-Continental, WBC International Silver, EBU European, IBO Inter-Continental, TWBA, Polish International, and interim WBC Youth World Cruiserweight Titles. He started his career by going 29-0 and has beaten the likes of Carl Davis, Michael Simms, Shawn Corbin, Jean Marc Mormeck, Adam Balski and Eric Fields.

The 28-year-old Riley of London, makes the ring walk with an unblemished record of 13-0 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed just 62 rounds. He turned pro back in 2018 after a good amateur career which saw him reportedly go 41-8. He reached the English National Elite 91kg semifinal in 2017; beat Chris Billam-Smith in the 2017 English National Championships Quarter-Final; reached the Semifinal of the 2015 England Youth National Championships; fought at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games; won the 2014 Great British Youth Championships won the 2013 Great Britain Junior Championships Final and captured a silver medal at the 2013 EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships.

As a pro, Riley won the vacant British Cruiserweight Title in September, 2023 by beating Nathan Quarless via a 10-round unanimous decision and defended it against Mikael Lawal by unanimous decision six months later. He took a bit of a step up in class against Cheavon Clarke the last time out as he had faced just domestic-level opposition up until then. Riley measures 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 76.5-inch wingspan so is basically the same size as Masternak. When it comes to power, he’s just above average as 58.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, including five of his past eight.

Prediction…

Riley, who will be fighting at home, is 10 years younger than Masternak but lacks pro experience. However Masternak has usually fallen slightly short when taking on top-class opponents. Riley is stepping up in class again here against the veteran and will need a solid chin. Masternak is quite durable and has been stopped just twice in 56 fights but Riley should have the skills to take a relatively close decision.

Riley has the close edge in skill and is 10 years younger.
