My Pick
The 26-year-old Davis enters the fight with a perfect record of 13-0 with 9 Ko’s and has fought 84 rounds since making his pro debut in February, 2021. Davis enjoyed a superb amateur career which saw him win silver medals at the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2019 World Championships, and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan as a lightweight, losing to Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the final of each of those tournaments. Davis stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and has had no problem adapting to pro boxing when it comes to power as he currently owns a knockout ratio of 69.2 per cent.
The only opponents to go the distance with him so far have been Jose Meza, who went six rounds in May, 2021 but lost every round in a unanimous decision defeat; Juan Carlos Burgos in December, 2022 who also lost every round; Francisco Patera in July, 2023, who went 10 rounds but was dropped in the eighth and managed to win just one round on one judge’s scorecard and Miguel Madueno, who won just one round on all three scorecards in July 2024. Nahir Albright also went the full 10 rounds and with Davis and earned a draw with one judge in October, 2023 but that majority-decision win for Davis was changed to a no-contest after he tested positive for marijuana.
Exceptional speed and power are what Davis brings to the ring as he continues his pro career. Understandably, he was brought along somewhat cautiously but each opponent he’s faced entered the ring with a winning record. He took a step up in class by facing a former world champion in Jose Pedraza in February, 2024 and stopped him in the sixth round to win the vacant IBF USBA Belt. Davis won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Belt with his win over Burgos in December, 2022 and then picked up the vacant WBC USA Belt when he stopped Anthony Yigit in the ninth round four months later.
The 29-year-old Ortiz enters the contest with a mark of 20-2-1 with 10 Ko’s and has boxed 138 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. He enjoyed a pretty good amateur career but was beaten by the likes of Jaron Ennis, Teofimo Lopez and Gary Antuanne Russell before turning pro. He stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 69-inch reach so gives up an inch in both height and reach to Davis. As far as power goes, Ortiz is average as 50 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s halted just two of his last nine opponents.
He dropped a close 12-round unanimous decision to Vasyl Lomachenko in October, 2022 and in 2024 he lost a controversial unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez in a shot at the WBO Junior Welterweight Title. The lone draw on his record was an eight-round majority affair with Joseph Adorno in April, 2021. Ortiz beat former world champion Jamel Herring via 10-round unanimous decision to retain the NABF Lightweight Crown and win the vacant IBF USBA Belt in May, 2022.
He then took another step up in class against Lomachenko and Lopez and handled himself quite well. Before meeting Herring, Ortiz had beaten the likes of Derrick Murray, Vitor Jones and Romain Couture. Since turning pro Ortiz has also captured the vacant WBC Youth World Lightweight Title, the vacant WBC Youth Inter-Continental Super Lightweight Belt and the vacant WBC (USNBC) Silver Lightweight Title. Ortiz also took the vacant NABF Lightweight Championship with his win over Nahir Albright in February, 2022.
Prediction…
Davis possesses fantastic boxing skills and speed and doesn’t rely on his power to win, but it’s always there. Ortiz isn’t known as a heavy-handed boxer but is always competitive. However, he just can’t seem to get over the hump when stepping up in class. I believe that trend is going to continue against Davis as I know Davis will have his hands full with him but will ultimately prevail and win his first fight as a junior welterweight by decision.
Davis has the better skills and power.
