Former WBA and IBF Bantamweight Champion Marlon Tapales of the Philippines is back in the ring this Wednesday, October 29th as he takes on Fernando Toro of Venezuela in a 10-round junior featherweight tilt over in Manila. Tapales last fought in April when he stopped Jon Jet jet after three rounds for the WBC International Silver Super Bantamweight Title. My Pick

The 33-year-old Tapales makes the ring walk with a record of 40-4 with 21 Ko’s and has boxed 282 rounds since making his pro debut in 2008. He’s been beaten by Brix Ray by stoppage after the sixth round in 2009 in a fight for the Filipino Flyweight Title and dropped a 12-round majority decision to David Sanchez in 2013. He was also stopped by Ryosuke Iwasa in the 11th round in 2019 for the interim IBF Super Bantamweight Title and of course was halted by Naoya Inoue in 10 rounds in December, 2023 to lose his world titles.

He bounced back from the loss to Inoue by winning the WBC Asian Continental Super Bantamweight Belt when he halted Nattapong Jankaew in just 135 seconds in May, 2024. He followed that up with a 10-round unanimous decision over Saurabh Kumar four months later and then stopped Jet in his last outing. Since turning pro Tapales has also captured the Filipino Light Flyweight crown as well as the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight Title.

He won the WBO Bantamweight Title in 2016 when he stopped Panya Uthok in the 11th round and then lost it on the weigh scales in his next outing against Shohei Omori despite stopping him in the 11th round. Tapales also owns wins over Armando de la Cruz, Randy Petalcorin, Warlito Parrenas, Richard Olisa, Hayata Kimura, Goodluck Mrema, Eden Sonsosa, Fernando Vargas Perra and Roberto Castaneda.

Tapales measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 65-inch reach and as far as power is concerned, he’s about average as 52.5 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. That being said, he had stopped 10 opponents in a row before going the distance with Murodjon Akhmadaliev in 2023 to win the IBF Super Bantamweight Title by controversial split decision. Therefore 12 of his last 14 victories have been by stoppage. Tapales is a fan-friendly boxer due to his tendency to drop or be dropped by his opponents during fights.

The 29-year-old Toro is basically an unknown who enters the ring with a record of 11-2 with 9 Ko’s and has 46 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2022. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information on the southpaw so we don’t know how he stacks up size-wise against Tapales. As far as power goes, he has quite a bit of it as 81.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but he’s halted just one of his past five opponents.

The first defeat on his record came at the hands of William Flores by way of a 10-round unanimous decision for the vacant Venezuelan Bantamweight Title. Toro was then stopped two fights later by Juan Rocha Meza in the third round. Toro is a domestic level boxer who hasn’t faced any body close to the skill level of Tapales. He will be taking a huge step up in class this week as just two of his 13 opponents entered the ring with a winning record and he lost to both of them.

Prediction…

This is basically another keep-busy fight for Tapales as he tries to work himself back into a world title shot. However he’s had too many of them lately and really needs to step up the class of opposition as this looks to be a complete mismatch on paper. Tapales needs to dominate or stop Toro to prove that he’s still relevant on the world stage. Boxers like Toro can sometimes be a thorn in the side though but I’m expecting Tapales to take care of business.

Tapales is a couple of classes above the unheralded Toro.
