Yankiel Rivera vs Angelino Cordova Preview August 23rd, 2025

The vacant WBA Interim Flyweight Title is on the line this Saturday, August 23rd when unbeaten Angelino Cordova of Venezuela takes on undefeated Yankiel Rivera of Puerto Rico this Saturday, March 24th. The 12-rounder from Orlando, Florida can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Cordova was last in the ring in December when he beat Josue Jesus Morales by an eight-round unanimous decision. Cordova upset Angel Acosta for the vacant WBO International Flyweight Title via a 10-round unanimous decision in April, 2024 and then took on WBC Flyweight Champion Julio Cesar Martinez 11 months later. He was dropped twice in round three and lost a majority decision. However it was changed to a no-contest after Martinez failed a drug test. Rivera’s last fight took place in December when he stopped Angel Gonzalez in the fourth round to win the WBC Silver and retain the WBO Intercontinental Flyweight Belt.

My Pick

The 27-year-old Rivera carries around a perfect record of 7-0 with 3 Ko’s and has boxed 44 rounds since making his pro debut in 2022. As an amateur he qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal at the Pan American Youth Championships in 2014. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 continental Olympic qualification and fought at the 2017 World Boxing Championships. He also won bronze at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 2019 Pan American Games.

Rivera stands 5-feet-3-inches tall with an unlisted reach but has below-average power in his fists as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 42.9 per cent and he’s gone the distance in four of his past five fights. Rivera captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas Flyweight Belt in February, 2024 via a 10-round unanimous decision over Andy Dominguez Velasquez. He then added the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Title four months later with a 10-round unanimous decision over Victor Sandoval after dropping him in the second round. All seven of Rivera’s opponents have had winning records and three of them (Angel Gonzalez, Andy Velasquez and Christian Robles were undefeated.

As for the 29-year-old Cordova, he makes the ring walk with a near-perfect official mark of 19-0-1 with 12 Ko’s and has boxed 105 rounds since making his pro debut in 2017 following an amateur career which saw him fight in the World Series of Boxing. He measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 65.5-inch reach which gives him a one-inch edge in height over Rivera. Cordova has enough power in his arsenal to cause some damage as his current knockout ratio comes in at 63.2 per cent. However he’s gone the distance in his last four fights with his last stoppage coming in February, 2021 when he halted Gregory in just 31 seconds.

But before he’s hailed as the next great thing in boxing, you should be aware that just five of Cordova’s 20 opponents entered the ring with a winning record. He took a gigantic leap in class against Angel Acosta and Julio Cesar Martinez though and proved he belongs with upper-level boxers. The lone blemish on Cordova’s record is a four-round draw with Luis Guatache in 2017. He also won the vacant WBO Latino Light Flyweight Belt in 2022 with a 10-round split decision over Axel Vega and the vacant Venezuelan Belt in 2018 when he stopped Freddy Beleno in the eighth round.

Prediction…

Cordova has looked quite effective lately and should have some confidence and momentum going for him following his win over Angel Acosta and his performance against Julio Cesar Martinez. Rivera doesn’t possess the power of Cordova but has slicker boxing skills and a wealth of amateur experience. This is a close call despite the odds but I’ll give Rivera the edge because of those skills.

Rivera’s smooth boxing skills will lead to victory.
