My Pick
The southpaw Itauma fights out of England and is just 20 years old. He climbs through the ropes with a perfect mark of 12-0 with 10 Ko’s and has boxed just 25 rounds since making his pro debut in January, 2023. Itauma, who is the brother of boxer Karol Itauma, was also reportedly unbeaten as an amateur as he went 24-0 with 11 Ko’s. He captured gold medals at the schoolboy, junior, Youth European and the Heavyweight Youth World levels. He stands just over 6-feet-4-inches tall with a 79-inch reach. When it comes to power, Itauma is at the elite level as his current knockout ratio kicks in at 83.3 per cent.
Seven of his knockouts have come in the first round while the other three have been second-round stoppages. The only two opponents who went the distance with him were Kevin Espindola and Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko, who both went six rounds with him in consecutive bouts in April and July of 2023. His second-round TKO over Ilja Mezencev was for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Belt which he has defended three times. Eight of his 12 opponents have had winning records with his most significant wins coming over Balogun, Demsey McKean and Mariusz Wach.
Whyte also fights out of England and is 16 years older than his opponent as he’s now 36 years old. He’s a former British and WBC International Heavyweight Champion and has also won the WBO International, WBC Silver and Interim WBC world Heavyweight Crowns. He makes the ring walk with a mark of 30-3 with 20 Ko’s and also has pretty good power in his fists with 66.7 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage. However he has stopped just three of his last eight opponents and is 6-2 in those bouts. Whyte measures 6-feet-4-four inches tall with a 78-inch reach so gives up a minimal half-inch in height and inch in teach to Itauma.
He’s fought 192 rounds since turning pro in 2011 after a short amateur career. Whyte’s biggest wins have been over Christian Hammer, Jermaine Franklin, Alexander Povetkin, Mariusz Wach, Oscar Rivas, Joseph Parker, Lucas Browne, Robert Helenius, Brian Minto and two victories over Dereck Chisora. His first pro defeat came at the hands of Anthony Joshua via a seventh-round stoppage in December, 2015 before Joshua won his title belts by beating Wladimir Klitschko. Whyte also fought Joshua as an amateur in 2009 and dropped him along the way to a decision win.
He was then stopped by Povetkin in the fifth round in 2020 after he dropped the Russian twice in the fourth round and his last defeat came at the hands of Tyson Fury by sixth-round TKO in 2022 in a shot at the WBC Heavyweight Title. Whyte’s a former kickboxer and mixed-martial artist with decent boxing skills but he usually relies on his power to carry him through. He’s got good size for a heavyweight but his chin can be questioned as he’s been stopped by Fury, Povetkin and Joshua and was decked by Parker and Rivas. Whyte’s also beaten the likes of Ian Lewison, David Allen and Marcelo Luiz Nascimento.
Prediction…
Whyte is an aging but pretty durable heavyweight who has decent power and plenty of experience against solid foes. If he’s at his best he could give Itauma a bit of bother for several rounds but his only chance really is if he can withstand Itauma’s power. This is a good test for the youngster but the best bet here is to go with Itauma to stop Whyte somewhere along the line as he has 12 rounds to do it in.
Itauma is 16 years younger with more power.
