Sebastian Fundora vs Tim Tzsyu Preview July 19th, 2025

WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora of West Palm Beach, Florida puts his belt on the line this Saturday, July 19th when he faces former WBO Champion Tim Tzsyu of Australia in a rematch. The 12-rounder from Las Vegas, Nevada can be seen live on Prime Video pay-per-view in most nations. Fundora won the vacant WBC Belt and the WBO Title when he beat Tzsyu via split decision in March, 2024 in a bloody battle. Fundora then defended both belts against Chordale Booker this March by fourth-round stoppage. However, the WBO stripped him for fighting this rematch with Tzsyu instead of facing his mandatory challenger. Since losing his title to Fundora, Tzsyu was stopped in his next fight in the seventh round by Bakhram Murtazaliev in a shot at the IBF Title seven months later and then rebounded by halting Joseph Spencer in the fourth round this March to win the vacant WBO Inter-Continental belt.

My Pick

The 27-year-old Fundora, who’s known as ‘The Towering Inferno’ is a bit of a freak of nature as he stands just over 6-feet-5-inches tall with an 80-inch reach. This gives the southpaw a nine-inch height advantage over Tzsty as well as a 9.5-inch edge in reach. However, similar advantages over Brian Mendoza didn’t help him out in April, 2023 when he was stopped in the seventh round to lose the WBC Interim Title. With that being his lone pro defeat, Fundora climbs into the ring with a near-perfect record of 22-1-1 with 14 Ko’s and has boxed 132 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following his amateur career.

Fundora has better-than average power to go along with a pretty good chin as 63.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However, he has halted just two of his last six opponents. His lone draw was a 10-round affair with Jamontay Clark in August, 2019 in a shot at the vacant WBC Youth Welterweight Title. Along with beating Tzsyu, Fundora has also beaten the likes of Carlos Ocampo, Erickson Lubin, Donnie Marshall, Nathaniel Gallimore, Habib Ahmed, Jorge Cota and Garcia as a pro.

The Tszyu name is well known in boxing as Tim is the son of former world champion Kostya Tszyu and the brother of Nikita Tzsyu. The 30-year-old climbs into the ring with a mark of 25-2 with 18 Ko’s and stands just under 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70.5-inch. He also possesses better-than-average power as 72 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. He’s has gone the distance in four of his last seven fights and has lost two of his past three.

Tszyu has fought 148 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following a good amateur career and has also captured the interim WBA Oceania, WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental, IBF Australasian, Commonwealth, WBO Global, and Australian Super Welterweight Titles since turning pro. Tszyu’s first step up in class came in August, 2020 when he stopped former world champion Jeff Horn in the seventh round.

He then halted former world champion Tony Harrison in the ninth round in March, 2023 to claim the Interim WBO Title and was elevated to full champion when Jermell Charlo was stripped of the belt when he fought Canelo Alvarez. Tszyu has also faced and beat legitimate contenders in Carlos Ocampo, Brian Mendoza, Terrell Gausha and Takeshi Inoue as they fought for world titles in the past and also has wins over the likes of Dennis Hogan, Wade Ryan, Steve Spark, Jack Brubaker, Ruben Webster, Larry Siwu, Denton Vassell, Joel Camilleri and the late Dwight Ritchie.

Prediction…

Like most of Fundora’s opponents, Tzsyu gives up a lot of height and reach to the champion. However he appeared to be winning their first fight until a clash of heads opened a huge gash on Tzsyu’s and he lost a lost of blood while it streamed down his face and impaired his vision. Tzsyu arguably possesses more one-punch power than Fundora but he’s not as consistently relentless in his attack, unless he senses his opponent is hurt. Fundora usually doesn’t use his size advantage as he likes to work on the inside and until getting caught by Mendoza with a tremendous punch, it’s worked well for him. This should be an interesting and dramatic fight based on their first clash and if Tzsyu can replicate his performance of that bout and stay cut-free, he should be able to do just enough to take Fundora’s belts. It’s certainly going to be a tough task though.

Tzsyu’s style could frustrate Fundora.
