NFL Betting Options
The three most popular bets on individual NFL games are the spread, money line and total. I will explain each of these betting options below using the Cowboys vs Eagles opening game from week 1 of this years NFL season as an example (odds from BetOnline.ag).
Points Spread
The point spread is the most common bet on NFL games. You will hear the spread talked about by analysts for every NFL game. The spread is the amount of points a team is favored to win by in the game.
In the above example the Dallas Cowboys are 8 point underdogs (+8), while the Eagles are 8 point favorites (-8).
- Cowboys spread bets win if the Cowboys win the game outright or lose by 7 or fewer points.
- Eagles spread bets win if the Eagles win the game by 9 or more points.
- Spread bets push (are returned) if the Eagles win the game by exactly 8 points.
Money Line
The money line is a straight forward bet on which team will win the game. The odds associated with each team indicate the risk vs reward of the bet based on each teams perceived chance of winning the game. In the above example the Eagles are -450 favorites, which means you would have to risk $450 to win $100 (payout $550) betting on Philadelphia. The Cowboys are +350 underdogs, which means a $100 bet on the Cowboys would win $350 (payout $450) if the Cowboys pull off the upset.
Total (Over/Under)
The final column in the above screenshot shows the odds for the total. This is a bet on the number of points to be scored in the game by both teams.
In the above example the total is set at 47.5 points.
- Over bets win if 48 or more points are scored.
