The Preakness Stakes was completed this past Saturday, which means there are now less than 3 weeks until the 2012 Belmont Stakes race, and what a Belmont Stakes it is shaping up to be. Kentucky Derby winner ‘I’ll Have Another’ pulled out another come from behind victory over ‘Bodemeister’, catching him down the stretch in an even more dramatic victory. Those two wins mean that ‘I’ll Have Another’ will be the first horse since ‘Big Brown’ in 2008 with a chance to capture the coveted United States Triple Crown! The Belmont Stakes race has become must watch television and online sports bettors will surely be flocking to the race to bet for or against history on June 9th.

Those are all of the horses that are penciled in to run in the 2012 Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Stakes usually has a smaller field than the Kentucky Derby. You have probably also noticed a familiar name not on that list. ‘Bodemeister’, the biggest rival of ‘I’ll Have Another’ and the second place horse in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes is going to be sitting out the Belmont Stakes race. This has left Union Rags and Dullahan as the two main horses who have a chance at beating I’ll Have Another and spoiling his Triple Crown attempt. Union Rags was the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby this year, but his odds lengthened as the race approached and he ended up finishing the race in 3rd. He did take the Preakness off though so he should be fresh and ready to challenge at the upcoming Belmont Stakes. Dullahan finished 3rd at the Kentucky Derby and he also took the Preakness Stakes off so it will be interesting to see how I’ll Have Another fares against these well rested horses.

Can I’ll Have Another be the first horse since Affirmed way back in 1978 to win the United States Triple Crown? Since Affirmed 11 horses have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but failed to win the Belmont Stakes race to complete the triple crown. The extra distance at the Belmont Stakes is why it is called ‘the test of the champion’ and we will see on June 9th if ‘I’ll Have Another’ has what it takes to join the greatest horses in the history of the sport. I’ll Have Another has shown he has the stamina to push hard at the end so he may be just the type of horse who can continue to excel over the longer distance that the Belmont Stakes offers. One thing is for certain. It will be an exciting race that the entire country will enjoy.
